Abeokuta Grammar School
Abeokuta Grammar School is a secondary school in the city of Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. It is currently located at Idi-Aba area, of Abeokuta. Often called the first grammar school in Nigeria, it is attended by students from all parts of Nigeria, the West Coast of Africa, South Africa, Europe and even Asia. History The school was founded in 1908 by the Abeokuta District Church Council (Anglicans). The school is associated with many notable figures from Nigerian politics and the arts, including the teacher and political activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and her son, the musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Academically, students of Abeokuta Grammar School entered for examination by the Royal College of Preceptors in 1909 and sat for the Cambridge Local Examination in 1911. Abeokuta is the capital city of Ogun State in southwest Nigeria. Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti
Chief Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, MON ( /ˌfʊnmiˈlaɪjoʊ ˈrænsəm ˈkuːti/; born Frances Abigail Olufunmilayo Thomas; 25 October 190013 April 1978), also known as Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti, was a Nigerian educator, political campaigner, suffragist, and women's rights activist. Fumilayo Ransome Kuti was born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, and was the first female student to attend the Abeokuta Grammar School. As a young adult, she worked as a teacher, organizing some of the first preschool classes in the country and arranging literacy classes for lower-income women. During the 1940s, Ransome-Kuti established the Abeokuta Women’s Union and advocated for women’s rights, demanding better representation of women in local governing bodies and an end to unfair taxes on market women. Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade CFR (1 January 1930 – 28 July 2015) was the fiftieth traditional ruler or ''Ooni'' of Ife from 1980 to his death in 2015, taking the regnal name Olubuse II.
