''Abel'' is a 1986 Dutch film directed by Alex van Warmerdam who also scripted and played the lead character. Other lead roles were played by Henri Garcin, Annet Malherbe and Olga Zuiderhoek. Supporting roles were played by Loes Luca and Arend Jan Heerma van Voss among others. Its music was written by Vincent van Waterdam and the film was distributed by First Floor Features. Plot Abel is a 31-year-old man who still lives with his parents. Due to agoraphobia, he hasn't been out for over 10 years, much to the chagrin of his father, Victor. On the other hand, he gets spoiled by his mother, Duif. He spends most of his days spying on the neighbors, setting up his parents against each other, knowingly or unknowingly, and fruitlessly trying to cut flies in two with an enormous pair of scissors. Alex Van Warmerdam
Alex van Warmerdam (born 14 August 1952) is a Dutch screenwriter, film director, and actor. He is also a painter. Life and career Van Warmerdam was born in Haarlem, a city in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. He was cofounder of the theatre group Hauser Orkater (which later became the musictheatre group Orkater). In 1980, he founded the theatre group De Mexicaanse Hond (The Mexican Dog), together with his brother Marc van Warmerdam. This is the name under which all the shows since 1989 have been released. He made his first feature film in 1986: ''Abel''. He plays a role in each of his films so far, with the exception of Grimm (film), Grimm (2003). Alex van Warmerdam is married to Dutch actress Annet Malherbe, who plays parts in most of his films and also functions as a casting director. Louise "Loes" Diana Wilhelmina Catharina Luca (born 18 October 1953) is a Dutch actress, singer and comedian. She began her career in the 1980s as a stage actress and singer in various musicals. Olga Zuiderhoek (born September 16, 1946 in Assen) is a Dutch actress. She graduated in 1970 from the Amsterdam Theater School. After having been associated with the cooperative association Het Werkteater for many years, she worked for the theater companies De Mexican Hond and Orkater and played mainly in new plays by homegrown, sometimes written for her. Theater Zuiderhoek was a member of the innovative theater group Het Werkteater from 1974 to 1982.
