Abe Lebewohl
Abe Lebewohl (1931–1996) was the founder of the Second Avenue Deli. The deli has been described as “possibly the Big Apple’s most well-known delicatessen” which was “famed worldwide as a hotspot for celebrities and regular Joe's alike.” Biography Lebewohl was born in Kulykiv, Ukraine. His father was sent to Siberia when the Soviets occupied western Ukraine and his mother to Kazakhstan. When the family was reunited, they made their way to Italy after spending time in Poland and Austria. The Second Avenue Deli (also known as 2nd Ave Deli) is a certified- kosher Jewish delicatessen in Manhattan, New York City. In December 2007, it relocated to 162 East 33rd Street (between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue) in Murray Hill. In August 2011, it opened a second branch at 1442 First Avenue (East 75th Street) on the Upper East Side. Sharon Lebewohl is a restaurateur, lecturer, food consultant, cookbook author, and a guest instructor at The Institute of Culinary Education and New York's Jewish community Center. She is daughter of Abe Lebewohl, the restaurant entrepreneur and founder of the Second Avenue Deli in New York City.
