Abd-el-Tif Prize
The Prix Abd-el-Tif (Abd-el-Tif prize) was a French art prize that was awarded annually from 1907–1961. It was modelled on the Prix de Rome, a scholarship that enabled French artists to stay in Rome. The award was devised in 1907 by Léonce Bénédite, curator of the Museum of Luxembourg and Charles Jonnart, governor-general of French Algeria. The prize comprised a bursary and a year's free stay at the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers, a state-owned institution for the study of Islamic art. Each year's prize winners were chosen by the Society of French Orientalist Painters. Colonnades De La Villa Abdeltif
In classical architecture, a colonnade is a long sequence of columns joined by their entablature, often free-standing, or part of a building. Paired or multiple pairs of columns are normally employed in a colonnade which can be straight or curved. The space enclosed may be covered or open. In St. Peter's Square in Rome, Bernini's great colonnade encloses a vast open elliptical space. When in front of a building, screening the door (Latin ''porta''), it is called a portico. When enclosing an open court, a peristyle. A portico may be more than one rank of columns deep, as at the Pantheon in Rome or the stoae of Ancient Greece. Pierre Deval (1897 in Lyon – 1993 in La Valette-du-Var), was a French figurative painter of the 20th century, noted as a colorist and for his subtle paintings of women and children. Jean Launois (22 November 1898 – 22 November 1942) was a French artist. Born in Les Sables-d'Olonne in Vendée, Launois demonstrated a gift and passion for drawing. His parents encouraged him, but his formal training was limited to working with Charles Milcendeau and later with Auguste Lepère. He had a short stint at the Ecole Julian in Paris. Launois did many sketches, drawings, and paintings during and after World War I. World War I The first World War broke out in 1914. On 15 December 1916, Launois enlisted in the mounted artillery rather than waiting for his "age class" to be inducted. Documentation is scarce on his military service, but he did see action on the Western Front during the winter, spring, and summer of 1917. Albert Pommier
Albert Pommier (11 January 1880, Paris – 1943, Paris) was a French sculptor. Biography Born in Paris in 1880, Pommier studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and was a pupil of Barrias. From 1905 he was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français and in 1914 won a prize and received a grant which allowed him to travel to Algeria and study there at the Villa Abd-el-Tif, although the outbreak of the war and his mobilization meant that he could only take advantage of this fully in 1919.
