Abbott Mysteries
''Abbott Mysteries'' was a comedy-mystery radio program adapted from the novels of Frances CraneBuxton, Frank and Owen, Bill (1972). ''The Big Broadcast: 1920-1950''. The Viking Press. SBN 670-16240-x. P. 4. (1896-1981). Initially a summer replacement for ''Quick As a Flash'', the series was heard on Mutual and NBC between the years 1945 and 1955. The Mutual series, sponsored by Helbros Watches, debuted June 10, 1945, airing Sundays at 6 p.m. The scripts by Howard Merrill and Ed Adamson were in the lighthearted tradition of ''Mr. and Mrs. North''. Julie Stevens and Charles Webster starred as Jean and Pat Abbott, a San Francisco married couple "who were habitually involved in various sorts of mayhem and in solving murders." Frances Crane
Frances Kirkwood Crane (October 27, 1890 – November 6, 1981) was an American Mystery fiction, mystery author, who introduced private investigator Pat Abbott and his future wife Jean in her first novel, ''The Turquoise Shop'' (1941). The Abbotts investigated crimes in a total of 26 volumes, each with a color in the title. Life and career Crane was born in Lawrenceville, Illinois, and hailed from a wealthy, well-educated family; most of her male relatives were doctors, and her aunt Nancy may have earned a master's degree, highly unusual for a woman of that time. Some biographies mistakenly list her birth year as 1896. Crane herself was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Illinois, and she did graduate study at the University of Chicago. Quick As A Flash
''Quick as a Flash'' was a 30-minute radio quiz program which featured drama segments with guest actors from radio detective shows. Created by director Richard Lewis and emcee Ken Roberts, the program debuted over the Mutual Network on Sunday, July 16, 1944. Sponsored by the Helbros Watch Company, the show was produced by Lewis and Bernard J. Prockter with scripts by Gene Wang. Music was by Ray Bloch and the Helbros Orchestra. Six contestants from the studio audience competed for cash and other prizes. Clues were presented in the form of dramatic sketches covering such subjects as current events, movies, books and historical situations. With a buzzer, a contestant could interrupt at any time to submit an answer. During the Helbros Derby, a guest detective from a radio mystery program put in an appearance. The Mutual Broadcasting System (commonly referred to simply as Mutual; sometimes referred to as MBS, Mutual Radio or the Mutual Radio Network) was an American commercial radio network in operation from 1934 to 1999. Julie Stevens (American Radio Actress)
Julie Stevens (born Harriet Foote, November 23, 1916 - August 26, 1984) was an American actress who performed on radio, television, the stage, and in movies. She is best known for her 16-year run as the title character in ''The Romance of Helen Trent'' on radio. Early years Born in St. Louis, Missouri, as Harriet Foote, Stevens attended Christian College. When she was 13, Stevens danced in a musical production of Provincetown's Wharf Theater. She later acted with the St. Louis Little Theater. She also acted in Shakespearean productions at the San Diego Globe Theatre and was an actress with the Pasadena Playhouse. Luis Van Rooten
Luis d'Antin van Rooten (November 29, 1906 – June 17, 1973) was a Mexican-born American actor. He was sometimes credited as Louis Van Rooten. Van Rooten was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and emigrated to the United States with his parents when he was eight, growing up in Pennsylvania. He earned his Bachelor of Arts, BA at the University of Pennsylvania and worked as an architect before deciding to pursue film work in Cinema of the United States, Hollywood during World War II. Lester Tremayne (16 April 1913 – 19 December 2003) was an English actor. Early life Born in Balham, London, he moved with his family at the age of four to Chicago, Illinois, where he began in community theater. His mother was Dolly Tremayne, a British actress. He danced as a vaudeville performer and worked as an amusement park barker. He began working in radio when he was 17 years old. Tremayne studied Greek drama at Northwestern University and anthropology at Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles. Alice Reinheart
Alice Reinheart (May 6, 1910 – June 10, 1993) was an American actress, best known for her work in old-time radio. An article in the September 1940 issue of Radio and Television Mirror magazine described her as "pert, vivacious, beautiful and talented in writing and music as well as acting." Early years Reinheart was born May 6, 1910, in San Francisco, California and grew up in Winnemucca, Nevada. She was called "a child prodigy, hogave piano concerts when she was 12." Reinheart "traveled extensively in Europe" before she was 16 years old. Radio Early days Frank Gallop went into broadcasting by chance. Born and raised in Boston's Back Bay and a graduate of Dorchester High School, he was working for an investment firm in 1934 when a client convinced him to become the replacement for his current announcer.
