The Abbotsford Flyers were a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. They were a part of the British Columbia Hockey League and played in the Coastal Conference. History In 1983, the Flyers avenged a poor playoffs in 1981-82. After sweeping the Burnaby Blue Hawks 4-games-to-none in the quarter-finals, the Flyers beat the New Westminster Royals 4-games-to-2 in the semi-finals, and the Kelowna Buckaroos 4-games-to-1 in the final to win their first and only BCJHL title. In the Mowat Cup, the Flyers defeated the Williams Lake Mustangs of the Peace-Cariboo Junior Hockey League 2-games-to-none to win the BC Jr. A title. Abbott Cup
The Abbott Memorial Cup, commonly referred to as the Abbott Cup, was awarded annually from 1919 through 1999 to the Junior "A" ice hockey Champion for Western Canada. The Cup was named after Captain E.L. (Hick) Abbott who was a noted hockey player in Western Canada. He captained the Regina Victorias when it won the (pre-Memorial Cup) Junior Championship of Canada in 1913 and 1914. Captain Abbott died in active service in the First World War and the trophy was presented in his memory in 1919 by the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association. Link Gaetz (born October 2, 1968) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League with the Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks. NHL career Gaetz was drafted in the second round, 40th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. According to then-North Stars general manager Lou Nanne, Gaetz was intended to provide on-ice protection for forward Mike Modano, Minnesota's No. 1 overall pick that year. Four months after being drafted by the North Stars, Gaetz was arrested and charged with drunk driving. Jim Dobson (ice Hockey)
James Herold Dobson (born February 29, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and coach. He played in 12 National Hockey League (NHL) games as a forward with the Minnesota North Stars, Colorado Rockies, and Quebec Nordiques. Career Dobson was drafted 90th overall by the Minnesota North Stars in 1979 after scoring 38 goals for the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He returned to junior and scored 66 goals in 1979-80 and was named to the WHL first all-star team before spending his first pro season with the Oklahoma City Stars of the Central Hockey League (CHL). Over this time he was recalled for a few games in Minnesota but did not fit into the team's long term plans. Daryl Stanley
Daryl Stanley (born December 2, 1962) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who spent parts of eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Philadelphia Flyers and Vancouver Canucks from 1983 until 1990. He also spent several seasons in the minor leagues, mainly playing in the American Hockey League. Playing career Stanley was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1981. After closing out his junior career with the Saskatoon Blades, he turned pro in 1982. Mike Zanier
Michael Zanier (born August 22, 1962) is a Canadian-born Italian former professional ice hockey goaltender who played extensively in Europe and in North American minor leagues. Born in Trail, British Columbia, Zanier's junior career was spent with five different teams in the WHL. He was never drafted, but signed with the Edmonton Oilers where he saw some NHL playing time. Zanier dressed for games 4 and 5 of the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals, due to Grant Fuhr being injured. He did not appear in either game. Although the Oilers won the Cup, Zanier's name was not engraved on it because he had not officially played in any NHL games. However, he did receive a Stanley Cup ring. Craig Sanford Redmond (born September 22, 1965) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played 191 games in the National Hockey League. He played for the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings. Biography Redmond was born in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. As a youth, he played in the 1978 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from the Fraser Valley. Larry Joseph Melnyk (born February 21, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, and Vancouver Canucks in a career that lasted from 1980 to 1990. With the Oilers he won the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 1985. Robert Paul McGill (born April 27, 1962) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. McGill played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1981 until 1994. Early life McGill began playing hockey when he moved to Leduc with his family in 1970. He left Leduc to play for the BCJHL’s Abbotsford Flyers in 1978.
