Orpheus (; Ancient Greek: Ὀρφεύς, classical pronunciation: ; french: Orphée) is a Thracian bard, legendary musician and prophet in ancient Greek religion. He was also a renowned poet and, according to the legend, travelled with Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece, and even descended into the Underworld of Hades, to recover his lost wife Eurydice. Ancient Greek authors as Strabo and Plutarch note Orpheus's Thracian origins. The major stories about him are centered on his ability to charm all living things and even stones with his music (the usual scene in Orpheus mosaics), his attempt to retrieve his wife Eurydice from the underworld, and his death at the hands of the maenads of Dionysus, who tired of his mourning for his late wife Eurydice. ''The Lyre of Orpheus'' (1988) is a novel by Canadian author Robertson Davies first published by Macmillan of Canada. ''Lyre'' is the last of three connected novels of the '' Cornish Trilogy''. It was preceded by '' The Rebel Angels'' (1981) and '' What's Bred in the Bone'' (1985). Plot In ''The Lyre of Orpheus'', the executors of the will of Francis Cornish (the subject of ''What's Bred in the Bone'') find themselves at the head of the "Cornish Foundation". Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus
''Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus'' is the thirteenth studio album by the Australian alternative rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, released on 20 September 2004 on Mute Records. It is a double album of seventeen songs. History The album was produced by Nick Launay at Studio Ferber in Paris in March–April 2004 and Nick Cave used The Bad Seeds line up of Mick Harvey, Thomas Wydler, Martyn Casey, Conway Savage, Jim Sclavunos, Warren Ellis, and James Johnston. It was the first album by the group for which Blixa Bargeld did not perform – English guitarist and organist Johnston, of the group Gallon Drunk, replaced Bargeld. Cave decided to split drumming duties for the two parts, with Sclavunos on ''Abattoir Blues'' and Wydler on ''The Lyre of Orpheus''. According to Launay, the whole album was completed in twelve days.
