''Abacab'' is the eleventh studio album by English rock band Genesis, released on 18 September 1981 by Charisma Records. After their 1980 tour in support of their previous album, ''Duke'' (1980), the band took a break before they reconvened in 1981 to write and record a new album. ''Abacab'' is the first Genesis album recorded at The Farm, a recording studio bought by the group in Chiddingfold, Surrey. It marked the band's development from their progressive roots into more accessible and pop-oriented songs, and their conscious decision to write songs unlike their previous albums. ''Abacab'' received a mostly positive reception from critics and was a commercial success for the band, becoming their second No. 1 LP on the UK Albums Chart and their first to reach the top ten of the US ''Billboard'' 200, peaking at No. 7. "Abacab" is a song by the British rock band Genesis, released on 14 August 1981. It was produced by Genesis and distributed in the United States by Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group. The song, written by Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford, was featured on Genesis' album of the same name and was a top 10 hit on the British pop chart, where it peaked at No. 9. The song was the second single from the album in the US, where it peaked at No. 26 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in early 1982. It stayed in the Top 40 for six weeks. The title is taken from the structure of an early version of the song. Genesis (band)
Genesis are an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's most commercially successful line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. The 1970s line-up, featuring singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett, was among the pioneers of progressive rock. The group were formed by five Charterhouse pupils, including Banks, Rutherford, Gabriel, and Anthony Phillips, and named by former Charterhouse pupil Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record several singles and their debut album ''From Genesis to Revelation'' in 1968. After splitting from King, the band began touring, signed with Charisma Records and became a progressive rock band on ''Trespass'' (1970). "No Reply at All" is a song by British band Genesis, released as the lead single in the US from their 1981 album ''Abacab''. It was not released in the UK, where "Abacab" was the first single. The US single release edit omits the second verse of the song as it appears on the ''Abacab'' album. Structure This song, like Phil Collins' solo track " I Missed Again" (recorded at around the same time), makes prominent use of a horn section, arranged by Tom Tom 84 (i.e. Thomas Washington, horn arranger for Earth, Wind & Fire) and played by that band's wind players, credited on the song as "EWF Horns". "Keep It Dark" is a song by British band Genesis, released on 23 October 1981 in the UK as the second single from ''Abacab''. It reached number 33 in the UK Singles Chart. Song information A light rock song, it describes a man who has been to the future and has seen a bright, happy world where everyone is filled with joy, cities are filled with light, with no fear of war, and all exploitation has ceased as all creatures have happier lives. Once he returns, however, he is pressured to lie about the incident (i.e., to "keep it dark"). Instead he claims that he was kidnapped by thieves who wanted to take his money. . Its three songs were originally written and recorded for their eleventh studio album '' Abacab'' (1981), but they were not included on the album's final track selection. Tony Banks (musician)
Anthony George Banks (born 27 March 1950) is an English musician, songwriter and film composer primarily known as the keyboardist and founding member of the rock band Genesis. Banks is also a prolific solo artist, releasing six solo albums that range through progressive rock, pop, and classical music. Banks co-founded Genesis in 1967 while studying at Charterhouse. He was their keyboardist and one of their principal songwriters and lyricists. He became a frequent user of the Hammond T-102 organ, Mellotron, ARP Pro Soloist and Yamaha CP-70 piano. In the band's earliest years Banks would play acoustic guitar for some of the mellow and pastoral songs. In 2010, Banks was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis. ''Three Sides Live'' is the third live album by the English rock band Genesis, released as a double album on 4 June 1982 on Charisma Records in the United Kingdom. It was released by Atlantic Records in the United States. After touring in support of their studio album '' Abacab'' ended in December 1981 the band entered an eight-month break in activity, during which they selected recordings from their previous tours for a live album. Charisma Records
Charisma Records (also known as The Famous Charisma Label) was a British record label founded in 1969 by former journalist Tony Stratton-Smith. He had previously acted as manager for rock bands such as The Nice, the Bonzo Dog Band and Van der Graaf Generator. Gail Colson was label manager and joint managing director. The label's most successful acts were Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Julian Lennon, and Monty Python. The first release was an LP by Rare Bird, in (probably) November 1969, and this group gave Charisma its first hit single, Sympathy, in early 1970. (Sympathy was a reworking of Giazotto's 'reconstruction' of Albinoni's Adagio.) ''In the Studio with Redbeard'' is a North American radio program, produced and hosted by Dallas, Texas, based rock and roll disc jockey Doug "Redbeard" Hill. The show is a weekly hour-long "rockumentary" interview with music program which looks at the making of many of the greatest albums recorded in rock and roll history, although sometimes it would spotlight the history of rock and roll bands. Redbeard interviews the musicians who created these albums. The Farm (recording Studio)
Fisher Lane Farm is the main recording studio of the English progressive rock band Genesis. The studio is located in Chiddingfold, Surrey, England. Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Phil Collins have also recorded there as solo artists, or with side projects (e.g. Mike + The Mechanics). Genesis recorded every album since '' Abacab'' in this studio, including '' Genesis'', ''Invisible Touch'' and '' We Can't Dance''; all of them became the best-selling albums released by the band. The farm was initially formed by a cowshed located beside a cottage, hence the full name "Fisher Lane Farm". It was remodelled into a studio in 1980, shortly before Genesis recorded their album '' Abacab''. In 1984, a new control room was added to the building, leaving the original control room to be an editing room.
