Hassan-Nour Sayid ( so, Xasan-Nuur Sayid, known by his stage name Aar Maanta) is a Somali people, Somali–British singer-songwriter, actor, composer, instrumentalist and music producer. Personal life Maanta, born Hassan-Nour Sayid in Jigjiga, the capital of the Somali Region Maanta later moved to the United Kingdom at the end of the 1980s, on the eve of the Somali Civil War, civil war in Somalia. As a lone child in a new country, Maanta turned to music for comfort, absorbing many genres including pop, rock, hip hop, Rhythm and blues, R&B and House music, house. He started studying music at school and then later at university. However, because of family pressure and disapproval due to his Muslim faith, Maanta was encouraged to follow a different career path. He consequently completed a degree in science, but eventually returned to singing. Jijiga (, am, ጅጅጋ, ''Jijiga'') is the capital city of Somali Region, Ethiopia. It became the capital of the Somali Region in 1995 after it was moved from Gode. Maryam Mursal ( so, Maryan Mursal, ar, مريم مرسل) (born 1 January 1950) is a Somali composer and vocalist. Biography Mursal grew up in Somalia in a Muslim family with four daughters. Mursal's family was originally from Somaliland, and is from the Madhibaan clan. As a teenager, she broke with tradition and began singing professionally in Mogadishu. She performed in nightclubs and her brand of music, featuring a mix of blues, soul, Somali and Arabic influences, and known as ''Somali jazz'', became popular across the country. Dhaanto is a style of traditional Somali music and folk dance. It is a cultural folk dance native to Somali people in the Horn of Africa. History The Dhaanto was believed to have been created by the nomadic abaskuul clan in the now Somali region of Ethiopia.
