Aalst Railway Station
Aalst railway station ( nl, Station Aalst, french: Gare d'Alost), officially Aalst, is a railway station in Aalst, East Flanders, Belgium. The station opened on 9 June 1853 and is located on railway lines 50 and 82. The train services are operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB). History The station originally opened on line 57 (Aalst - Dendermonde - Lokeren) with line 50 opening on 7 April 1855. On 1 June 1876, the station was connected with Zottegem on line 82 and on 12 October 1879, the line 61 to Antwerp opened. Aalst was disconnected from line 61 on 2 June 1957. The connection between Aalst and Dendermonde was closed on 31 May 1964. Since 2006, the station area has been undergoing a heavy redevelopment. This resulted in a new subway with lifts, new platforms, a new bus station, a new car park, 2 new covered bicycle parking, a newsagent, a bicycle recovery point, a renovated station square and renovated neighbouring streets and project development. ... Aalst (; french: Alost, ; Brabantian dialect, Brabantian: ''Oilsjt'') is a City status in Belgium, city and Municipalities in Belgium, municipality on the Dender River, northwest from Brussels in the Flemish Region, Flemish Provinces of Belgium, province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the city of Aalst itself and the villages of Baardegem, Erembodegem, Gijzegem, Herdersem, Hofstade, Meldert, Moorsel and Nieuwerkerken. The Belgian railway line 50 is a railway line in Belgium connecting Brussels to Ghent. The first section between Ghent and Schellebelle was finished in 1837, offering a connection to Brussels through Dendermonde and Mechelen. The section between Schellebelle and Brussels was completed on 1 May 1856. A section between Ghent and Ostend was completed in 1838 and is named Belgian railway line 50A, line 50A. Between 1923 and 1933, the line 50A was extended to Brussels, which provides a fast connection between Brussels and Ghent. Vlaamse Vervoersmaatschappij De Lijn (English: Flemish transport company ''De Lijn''), usually known as De Lijn (, "The Line"), is a company run by the Flemish government in Belgium to provide public transportation with about 2240 buses and 399 trams. De Lijn was founded in 1991 after the public transportation companies of Antwerp and Ghent fused with the Flemish part of the NMVB (Nationale Maatschappij van Buurtspoorwegen, or the "National Company of Neighborhood Railways"). Socialist politician Steve Stevaert of Hasselt implemented a policy allowing registered residents in Flanders aged 65+ to ride anywhere in Flanders free.
