''A Year of the Quiet Sun'' ( pl, Rok spokojnego słońca) is a 1984 Polish film written and directed by Krzysztof Zanussi and starring Maja Komorowska and Scott Wilson. It tells the story of a romance between a Polish woman and an American soldier in Poland, shortly after WWII. The film was nominated for 1986's Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. At the Venice Film Festival, the film was awarded the Golden Lion and Pasinetti Awards. Krzysztof Zanussi
Krzysztof Pius Zanussi (born 17 June 1939) is a Polish film and theatre director, producer and screenwriter. He is a professor of European film at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland where he conducts a summer workshop. He is also a professor at the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School of the University of Silesia in Katowice. He is the recipient of the Golden Lion at the 1984 Venice Film Festival for ''A Year of the Quiet Sun'', the Jury Prize at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival for ''The Constant Factor'' as well as two Grands Prix at the 1977 and 2000 Gdynia Film Festival for ''Camouflage'' and ''Life as a Fatal Sexually Transmitted Disease'' respectively. Jerzy Nowak (20 June 1923 – 26 March 2013) was a Polish film and theatre actor and teacher. Biography During World War II, Nowak fought with the Polish partisans. In 1948, he graduated from the Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts in Kraków. From 1994 on, Nowak primarily and continuously played the role of Singer Hirsch, who is a historic character in the legacy of Polish theater. In cinema, he mostly took on supporting roles as a Jew, often set during World War Two, such as in ''Schindler's List'' (directed by Steven Spielberg), or as a 'bumpkin farmer' in '' Three Colors: White'', and as the great creative Zucker in the film'' The Promised Land'' ( directed by Andrzej Wajda). Jerzy Oskar Stuhr (; born 18 April 1947) is a Polish film and theatre actor. He is one of the most popular, influential and versatile Polish actors. He also works as a screenwriter, film director and drama professor. He served as the Rector of the Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts in Kraków for two terms: from 1990 to 1996 and again from 2002 to 2008. Life and career Stuhr was born in Kraków. His ancestors, Leopold Stuhr and Anna Thill, migrated within Austria-Hungary from Mistelbach to Cracow shortly after their wedding in 1879.
