Harry Brown (writer)
Harry Peter McNab Brown Jr. (April 30, 1917 – November 2, 1986) was an American poet, novelist and screenwriter. Life Born in Portland, Maine, he was educated at Harvard University, where he was friends with American poet Robert Lowell. Brown dropped out of Harvard after his sophomore year to write poetry, work at ''Time magazine'', and he contributed to and became a sub-editor of ''The New Yorker''. Charles Scribner's Sons of New York published, in 1941, Brown's sustained unified poem ''The Poem of Bunker Hill''. The 158-page poetic epic won praise for its author's literary gifts as a poet and for the timely presentation of a vital topic – young men and war. Louise Bogan from ''The New Yorker'' stated: "Brown...possesses one of the most unmistakable poetic gifts which have recently appeared. ''A Walk in the Sun'' is a 1945 American war film based on the novel by Harry Brown, who was a writer for ''Yank, the Army Weekly'' based in England. The book was serialized in ''Liberty Magazine'' in October 1944. The film was directed by Lewis Milestone, stars Dana Andrews and features Richard Conte, George Tyne, John Ireland, Lloyd Bridges, Sterling Holloway, Norman Lloyd, Herbert Rudley and Richard Benedict, with narration by Burgess Meredith. In 2016, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress, and selected for preservation in its National Film Registry. Earl Robinson
Earl Hawley Robinson (July 2, 1910 – July 20, 1991) was a composer, arranger and folk music singer-songwriter from Seattle, Washington. Robinson is remembered for his music, including the cantata "Ballad for Americans" and songs such as " Joe Hill" and "Black and White", which expressed his left-leaning political views. He wrote many popular songs and music for Hollywood films, including his collaboration with Lewis Allan on the 1940s hit "The House I Live In" from the Academy Award winning film of the same name. He was a member of the Communist Party from the 1930s to the 1950s. The jazz clarinetist Perry Robinson (19382018) was his son. Career in music Robinson studied violin, viola and piano as a child, and studied composition at the University of Washington, receiving a BM and teaching certificate in 1933.
