A Useful Life
''A Useful Life'' ( es, La vida útil) is a 2010 Uruguayan drama film about the love of film, directed by Federico Veiroj and shot in black-and-white. The film was selected as the Uruguayan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards but it did not make the final shortlist. Plot Set in Montevideo's legendary Cinemateca Uruguaya, it is the story about the closure of a cinematheque with the same name due to financial difficulties, and how it affects its film loving middle manager Jorge (played by film critic-turned-actor Jorge Jellinek), who has worked there for 25 years. At first he is overwhelmed by the prospect of having no profession or purpose, and drifts around in Montevideo. But eventually he realises that nothing can kill his love for film, so he ends the day by taking his love interest to the cinema. Federico Veiroj (born 1976 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan film director, screenwriter, producer, and actor. Veiroj studied Communications at the UCUDAL. The Havana Film Festival is a Cuban festival that focuses on the promotion of Latin American filmmakers. Uruguay has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film regularly since 2001. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Uruguay, represented by Cinemateca Uruguaya, submitted drama '' A Place in the World'' to AMPAS in the fall of 1992. On 3 December 1992, AMPAS included the film on its list of official submissions and it was screened alongside 32 other films for AMPAS' Foreign Language Film Committee. On 17 February 1993, it was announced that the film had been nominated for an Oscar, representing Uruguay. This is a list of submissions to the 83rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The deadline for all countries to send in their submissions was 1 October 2010. The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2009, and 30 September 2010.
