''A Town Has Turned to Dust'' is a 1998 update of ''A Town Has Turned to Dust'' (1958), written by Rod Serling. It was originally shown on the Syfy Channel. Plot Jerry Paul is a successful, racist dweller-merchant whose wife is overly attentive to their driver-servant Tommy. Jerry has Tommy arrested on false charges of rape and theft. The town's Sheriff Denton is unable to stop a vigilante mob led by Jerry from lynching Tommy but the incident is recorded by a TV reporter named Hannify, who is visiting Earth from New Angeles. The rest of the story revolves around how the report is used, revelations of a past crime, and a showdown in the style of '' High Noon''. "A Town Has Turned to Dust" is the 38th episode of the second season of the American television play broadcast live on June 19, 1958, as part of the second season of the CBS television series '' Playhouse 90''. Rod Serling wrote the teleplay, and John Frankenheimer directed. Rod Steiger and William Shatner starred. Serling originally wrote the story about the lynching of a young African-American in the Southern United States. Due to objections from the program's commercial sponsors, who were concerned with offending white Southern viewers, it was not produced and aired until Serling moved the story's setting out of the South and changed the victim from black to Mexican. Plot The production opens with a reporter, Hennify (played by James Gregory), dictating the story of a lynching to be wired back to his newspaper in St. Louis.
