A Thousand To One
''A Thousand to One'' is a 1920 American silent drama film directed by Rowland V. Lee and starring Hobart Bosworth, Ethel Grey Terry and Charles West. Plot The story follows William Newlands, a man deep in debt who marries wealthy Beatrice on the advice of his unscrupulous friend, Jimmy Munroe. On their honeymoon train, they experience a derailment where Beatrice saves the life of mine owner Steven Crawford, but loses sight of her husband who is presumed dead. In reality, Newlands has survived the wreck and is filled with remorse for his past actions. He disguises himself with a beard and finds work at Crawford's mine, eventually becoming the foreman. During his time there, he brings law and order to the miners and discovers a rich vein of ore, saving Crawford from financial ruin. Despite his success, Newlands avoids Beatrice as he has decided to stay out of her life. However, Beatrice recognizes him and begs for a second chance at their marriage. Fred Kohler
Fred Kohler (April 20, 1888 – October 28, 1938) was an American actor. Career Fred Kohler was born in Kansas City, Missouri or in Dubuque, Iowa. As a teen, he began to pursue a career in vaudeville, but worked other jobs to support himself. He lost part of his right hand in a mining accident during this time. Eventually he was able to join a touring company, and worked steadily in show business for several years. His son Fred Kohler Jr. also became an actor. America's budding film industry drew a 20-something Kohler to Hollywood, where he made his start in silent films. His first role was in the 1911 short ''The Code of Honor'', and he had an uncredited role in Cecil B. DeMille's feature film ''Joan the Woman'' (1917), but a steady stream of parts did not begin until ''The Tiger's Trail'' (1919). Kohler's stern features earned him a niche playing villains. The University Press of Kentucky (UPK) is the scholarly publisher for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and was organized in 1969 as successor to the University of Kentucky Press. The university had sponsored scholarly publication since 1943. In 1949, the press was established as a separate academic agency under the university president, and the following year Bruce F. Denbo, then of Louisiana State University Press, was appointed as the first full-time professional director. Denbo served as director of UPK until his retirement in 1978, building a small but distinguished list of scholarly books with emphasis on American history and literary criticism. Since its reorganization, the Press has represented a consortium that now includes all of Kentucky's state universities, seven of its private colleges, and two historical societies.
