''A Swingin' Affair'' is a 1962 album by saxophonist Dexter Gordon, recorded two days after ''Go (Dexter Gordon album), Go!'', and with the same line-up. Recording and music The album was recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on August 29, 1962. Gordon's quartet contained pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Billy Higgins. Of the six compositions, three are standards, two were written by Gordon, and one was contributed by Warren. Release and reception ''A Swingin' Affair'' was released in early October 1964. ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz'' picked "You Stepped Out of a Dream" as the album's highlight, but described the session as a "not altogether riveting date". Dexter Gordon
Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and actor. He was among the most influential early bebop musicians, which included other greats such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell. Gordon's height was , so he was also known as "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant". His studio and performance career spanned more than 40 years. Gordon's sound was commonly characterized as being "large" and spacious and he had a tendency to play behind the beat. He was known for inserting musical quotes into his solos, with sources as diverse as " Happy Birthday" and well known melodies from the operas of Wagner. This is not unusual in jazz improvization, but Gordon did it frequently enough to make it a hallmark of his style. One of his major influences was Lester Young. Tenor Saxophone
The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the alto is pitched in the key of E), and written as a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch. Modern tenor saxophones which have a high F key have a range from A2 to E5 (concert) and are therefore pitched one octave below the soprano saxophone. People who play the tenor saxophone are known as "tenor saxophonists", "tenor sax players", or "saxophonists". Alberta Nichols
Alberta Nichols (December 3, 1898 – February 4, 1957) was a popular songwriter of the 1930s and 1940s. Together with her husband, lyricist Mann Holiner, they composed over 100 songs, of which their most famous were "Until the Real Thing Comes Along" and "A Love Like Ours". Biography Nichols was born in Lincoln, Illinois on December 3, 1898 and studied piano at the Louisville Conservatory with George Copeland and Alfred Calzin. Her career spanned writing for vaudeville, radio, musical theater and the movies. In 1931 Nichols and Holiner collaborated with Sammy Cahn, Saul Chaplin and L.E. Freeman for the Broadway show "Rhapsody in Black". The group of five also co-wrote "Until the Real Thing Comes Along". Saul Chaplin (February 19, 1912 – November 15, 1997) was an American composer and musical director. He was born Saul Kaplan in Brooklyn, New York. He had worked on stage, screen and television since the days of Tin Pan Alley. In film, he won three Oscars for collaborating on the scores and orchestrations of ''An American in Paris'' (1951), ''Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'' (1954) and ''West Side Story'' (1961). Sammy Cahn
Samuel Cohen (June 18, 1913 – January 15, 1993), known professionally as Sammy Cahn, was an American lyricist, songwriter, and musician. He is best known for his romantic lyrics to films and Broadway songs, as well as stand-alone songs premiered by recording companies in the Greater Los Angeles Area. He and his collaborators had a series of hit recordings with Frank Sinatra during the singer's tenure at Capitol Records, but also enjoyed hits with Dean Martin, Doris Day and many others. "(It Will Have to Do) Until the Real Thing Comes Along" is a popular song first published in 1936. Background In 1931, Alberta Nichols wrote the music and Mann Holiner wrote the words for a song titled "Till the Real Thing Comes Along" which was featured in a Broadway revue titled ''Rhapsody in Black''. The review, produced by Lew Leslie, was similar to the famous '' Blackbirds'' reviews of the late 1920s and 1930s, and featured Ethel Waters, who introduced "Till the Real Thing Comes Along". The song was not a hit in its original incarnation, though a sheet music edition was published by Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. in 1931.
