''A Rose'' is an early 20th-century painting by American artist Thomas Anshutz. Done in oil on canvas, the work depicts a young woman, Rebecca H. Whelen, sitting in a chair wearing a rose-colored dress. The painting - in keeping with artistic themes of the early 20th-century - compares a woman and her attire to a rose flower, but also evokes the sense that the young woman is intellectually and emotionally alert. Whelen herself was the daughter of a trustee of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at which Anshutz was a long-time teacher. Anshutz's work has been compared to that of his contemporary Thomas Eakins (specifically Eakins' 1900 portrait ''The Thinker'') and to Diego Velázquez. Thomas Anshutz
Thomas Pollock Anshutz (October 5, 1851 – June 16, 1912) was an American painter and teacher. Known for his portraiture and genre scenes, Anshutz was a co-founder of The Darby School. One of Thomas Eakins's most prominent students, he succeeded Eakins as director of drawing and painting classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Personal life and education Thomas Anshutz was born in Newport, Kentucky in 1851. He grew up in Newport and Wheeling, West Virginia. His early art instruction took place at the National Academy of Design in the early 1870s, where he studied under Lemuel Wilmarth. In 1875, he moved to Philadelphia and studied with Thomas Eakins at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, beginning a close association between the two. In 1892 Anshutz married Effie Shriver Russell. Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins (; July 25, 1844 – June 25, 1916) was an American realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator. He is widely acknowledged to be one of the most important American artists. For the length of his professional career, from the early 1870s until his health began to fail some 40 years later, Eakins worked exactingly from life, choosing as his subject the people of his hometown of Philadelphia. He painted several hundred portraits, usually of friends, family members, or prominent people in the arts, sciences, medicine, and clergy. Taken ''en masse'', the portraits offer an overview of the intellectual life of contemporary Philadelphia; individually, they are incisive depictions of thinking persons. Diego Velázquez
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (baptized June 6, 1599August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c.1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece ''Las Meninas'' (1656). Velázquez's paintings became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. Gary Tinterow OAL (born 1953 in Louisville) is an American art historian and curator. A specialist on 19th-century French art, Tinterow is currently Director and Margaret Alkek Williams Chair of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Career Born in Louisville, but raised in Houston, Tinterow graduated from Bellaire High School in 1972. He then received a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Brandeis University in 1976. His senior honors thesis was on Jewish architecture and was titled "Post-World War II Synagogue Architecture in America." Tinterow then proceeded to receive a Master of Arts in Art History from Harvard University in 1983. After graduating from Harvard, Tinterow was hired at Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he would remain until 2012.
