''A Private Island'' is a 1964 Australian television play. It was written by Brisbane author Chris Gardner (real name Marjorie Gardner) and was directed by Henri Safran. Premise Set in Sydney, Ben Clayburn is a real estate agent whose two children are grown up and settled. Ben decides to buy an island off the coast of Queensland and live there with his wife. His son Don has other ideas. His daughter wants to go to work to support her artist husband. Chris Gardner (writer)
Chris Gardner was the pen name for Marjorie Gardner, an English-Australian writer of television, radio and theatre. She was born in England and emigrated to Australia in the 1950s, settling at Woody Point, Queensland. Gardner started writing when briefly bed-ridden due to a slipped disc then became more serious about it when she joined a Brisbane radio group in 1956. Her radio plays were produced by the ABC. She also wrote for stage and television. Her stage play ''The Pub at Pelican Creek'' was commended in the 1958 General Motors play competition. Her television play ''Dark Under the Sun'' featured one of the first interracial romances on Australian television. Henri Safran
Henri Safran (born 7 October 1932) is a Paris-born director who worked extensively in Australia. He worked in French television, then in Britain, before moving to Australia in 1960 to work with the ABC. He became an Australian citizen in 1963 but returned to England in 1966 to work on British television. ''The Canberra Times'' is a daily newspaper in Canberra, Australia, which is published by Australian Community Media. It was founded in 1926, and has changed ownership and format several times. ''A Season in Hell'' (french: Une Saison en Enfer}) is an extended poem in prose written and published in 1873 by French writer Arthur Rimbaud. It is the only work that was published by Rimbaud himself. The book had a considerable influence on later artists and poets, including the Surrealists. Writing and publication history Rimbaud began writing the poem in April 1873 during a visit to his family's farm in Roche, near Charleville on the French-Belgian border. ''Dark Under the Sun'' is a 1960 Australian TV play. It was written by Brisbane author, Chris Gardner, who also wrote ''The House of Mancello'' (1962) and ''A Private Island'' (1964). Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. The play concerned an interracial romance which led ''Filmink'' magazine to think it was "an indication that Australian television was willing to confront some of the nation’s trickier social issues head on." Richard Meikle
Richard Meikle (10 October 1929 – 2 June 1991) was an Australian actor who worked extensively in film, theatre, and radio. He was the father of writer Sam Meikle. Career Meikle began his career as a stage actor. His first recorded role was in Metropolitan Theatre's production of ''Ned Kelly'' in 1947. In the 1950s, Meikle moved into radio acting, most prominently with Grace Gibson Radio Productions. Meikle's voice landed him many major roles with the company as both an actor and an announcer. Meikle was included in Reg James' list of his favourite Grace Gibson performances for his starring role alongside John Unicomb in the serial ''Becket''. Another factor working in Meikle's favour was his ability and desire to perform his own sound effects. Grace Gibson Productions' budget did not cover a professional sound effects person and as such actors who could do effects themselves were highly sought after.
