A Jovial Crew
''A Jovial Crew, or the Merry Beggars'' is a Caroline era stage play, a comedy written by Richard Brome. First staged in 1641 or 1642 and first published in 1652, it is generally ranked as one of Brome's best plays, and one of the best comedies of the Caroline period; in one critic's view, Brome's '' The Antipodes'' and ''A Jovial Crew'' "outrank all but the best of Jonson." Publication The play was first published in 1652, in a quarto printed by James Young for the booksellers Edward Dod and Nathaniel Ekins. The volume contains Brome's dedication of the play to Thomas Stanley. The quarto also features prefatory verses composed by James Shirley, John Tatham, and Alexander Brome among others. The play was Brome's most popular work during its own historical era, and was reprinted in 1661 (by bookseller Henry Brome), 1684 (by Joseph Hindmarsh), and 1708 (C. Brome). He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament and is most famous for the diary he kept for a decade. Stratford-upon-Avon (), commonly known as just Stratford, is a market town and civil parish in the Stratford-on-Avon district, in the county of Warwickshire, in the West Midlands region of England. Sir William Yonge, 4th Baronet
Sir William Yonge, 4th Baronet (c. 169310 August 1755), , of Escot House in the parish of Talaton in Devon, was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons for 39 years from 1715 to 1754. Origins Yonge was the son and heir of Sir Walter Yonge, 3rd Baronet, and his second wife Gwen Williams, daughter of Sir Robert Williams, 2nd Baronet of Penryn, Cornwall. He was a great-great-grandson of Walter Yonge (1579–1649), a lawyer, merchant and notable diarist, whose diaries (1604–45) are valuable material for the contemporaneous history of Great Britain. Career In 1715 Yonge was returned as Member of Parliament for his family's Rotten Borough of Honiton, in Devon and held the seat until 1754. Edward Roome
Edward Roome (died 1729) was an English lawyer, known as one of the writers of the comic opera ''The Jovial Crew''. Roome was the son of an undertaker for funerals in Fleet Street in London, and was brought up to the law. In October 1728 Roome succeeded Philip Horneck as Solicitor to the Treasury. He died on 10 December 1729. Roome and Alexander Pope Alexander Pope refers to him in ''The Dunciad''. Matthew Concanen
Matthew Concanen (1701 – 22 January 1749) was a writer, poet and lawyer born in Ireland. Life Concanen studied law in Ireland but travelled to London as a young man, and began writing political pamphlets in support of the Whig government. He also wrote for newspapers including the ''London Journal'' and ''The Speculatist''. He published a volume of poems, some of which were original works and some translations. He wrote a dramatic comedy, '' Wexford Wells'', staged at Dublin's Smock Alley Theatre. A collection of his essays from ''The Speculatist'' was published in 1732. The ballad opera is a genre of English stage entertainment that originated in the early 18th century, and continued to develop over the following century and later. The Beggar's Opera
''The Beggar's Opera'' is a ballad opera in three acts written in 1728 by John Gay with music arranged by Johann Christoph Pepusch. It is one of the watershed plays in Augustan drama and is the only example of the once thriving genre of satirical ballad opera to remain popular today. Ballad operas were satiric musical plays that used some of the conventions of opera, but without recitative. The lyrics of the airs in the piece are set to popular broadsheet ballads, opera arias, church hymns and folk tunes of the time. The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, commonly known as Drury Lane, is a West End theatre and Grade I listed building in Covent Garden, London, England. The building faces Catherine Street (earlier named Bridges or Brydges Street) and backs onto Drury Lane.
