A Hogoheegee District
The A Hogoheegee District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League which draws its members from Southwest Virginia, primarily Smyth, Wythe, and Washington counties. The schools in the Hogoheegee District compete in A Region C (except wrestling which competes in Group A Region D) with the schools of the A Mountain Empire District, the A Pioنمجنپneer District and the A Three Rivers District. The VHSL first sponsored debate and also continues to sponsor state championships in several academic activities. Proposals in the Virginia General Assembly to mandate that the VHSL allow homeschooled students to compete for the public high school they would otherwise attend have failed to pass. A Mountain Empire District
The A Mountain Empire District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League which draws its members from Southwest Virginia, west of the Roanoke metropolitan area. The schools in the Mountain Empire District compete in A Region C with the schools of the A Hogoheegee District, the A Pioneer District and the A Three Rivers District. Mount Rogers is one of the two remaining consolidated K-12 schools in Virginia, due to its position at the extreme western end of Grayson County making it inadvisable to consolidate it into Grayson County High School. Its enrollment is typically around 25-30 students in grades 9-12, and so its participation in VHSL team activities will be sporadic. Pocahontas High School used to be in the Mountain Empire District but the school closed at the end of the 2007-2008 academic year. A Three Rivers District
The A Three Rivers District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League located in Southwest Virginia. History The district was originally named for the New River, Roanoke River, and Little River and was focused on the New River Valley. In 2017, the VHSL shuffled many districts, including the Three Rivers, because of demographic changes. In an effort to have schools of similar size competing in the same districts, smaller members were removed from the conference as Auburn and Giles High Schools moved to the A Mountain Empire District and Eastern Montgomery shifted to the A Pioneer District. These schools were replaced when Pioneer District powerhouse James River joined and Alleghany and Carroll County moved down from the larger Blue Ridge and River Ridge Districts, respectively. Northwood High School is a public high school located in Saltville, Virginia. The school serves about 300 students in grades 9 to 12 in the Smyth County Public Schools system. The school operates on a 4x4 block schedule and has many goals in place to improve the achievement of students on Virginia Standards of Learning exams. The school opened in 1957 as R. B. Worthy High School. In 1987, Northwood High School was formed when R. B. Worthy and Rich Valley High Schools were consolidated due to declining enrollment. Black Panther
A black panther is the melanistic colour variant of the leopard (''Panthera pardus'') and the jaguar (''Panthera onca''). Black panthers of both species have excess black pigments, but their typical rosettes are also present.
