"A Girl Called Johnny" is a song from Scottish-Irish folk rock band The Waterboys, which was released in 1983 as the lead single from their debut studio album ''The Waterboys''. The song was written by Mike Scott and produced by Rupert Hine. It reached No. 80 in the UK Singles Chart and remained in the Top 100 for three weeks. Writing "A Girl Called Johnny" was inspired by American singer-songwriter Patti Smith. Scott discovered Smith's musical work and poetry in 1976 and became a big fan, which led to him forming his own fanzine, Jungleland. In 1978, Scott was aware Smith was due to perform with her band at the Rainbow Theatre in London. He knew she always stayed at the Portobello Hotel and was successful in speaking to her over the phone after ringing the hotel. The Waterboys
The Waterboys are a folk rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1983 by Scottish musician Mike Scott. The band's membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Mike Scott has remained as the only constant member throughout the band's career. They have explored a number of different styles, but their music is mainly a mix of folk music with rock and roll. They dissolved in 1993 when Scott departed to pursue a solo career. The group reformed in 2000, and continue to release albums and to tour worldwide. Scott emphasises a continuity between The Waterboys and his solo work, saying that "To me there's no difference between Mike Scott and the Waterboys; they both mean the same thing. Adrian Johnston (musician)
Adrian Johnston (born 1961) is an English musician and composer for film and television, who resides in London and Samois-sur-Seine. Biography Born in the county of Lancashire, Johnston attended the University of Edinburgh, studying English. He has been a drummer in bands including Moles for Breakfast, The Waterboys, the Wanglers, Combo Zombo, and The Mike Flowers Pops. During his twenties, he travelled the world providing music accompaniment to silent films at film festivals. He later scored productions for the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Johnston's first film score was for the 1996 Thomas Hardy adaptation '' Jude''. He has also composed original scores for ''Becoming Jane'', a 2007 film about Jane Austen, and the 2008 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's ''Brideshead Revisited''. Alan Mair
Alan Mair is a Scottish musician, songwriter and record producer. Mair's music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as the co-founder and bass guitarist for the English rock band the Only Ones, co-producing their second studio album ''Even Serpents Shine'' and writing and singing "My Way Out of Here" for their third and final album ''Baby's Got a Gun''. They released a top 60 hit in 1992 with the single "Another Girl, Another Planet". The band has maintained a cult following throughout its existence. Mair began his solo career in 2014, while still a member of the Only Ones. Career Mair grew up in the Glasgow area. He began playing guitar at about age 13 and gained experience in various bands during the 1960s. In 1962, Mair and Eddie Campbell formed the Glasgow band The Beatstalkers. Kevin Michael Wilkinson (11 June 1958 – 17 July 1999) was an English drummer, who was based in Baydon, Wiltshire, England. Career Born Kevin Michael Wilkinson in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, he is credited as a former official member of several successful British new wave acts, including the League of Gentlemen (1980), the Waterboys (1983–84), China Crisis (1983–89) and Squeeze (1995–96), as well as drummer for Holly Beth Vincent (1981–82). ''Hello Angel'' is the seventh and final studio album by British singer Sandie Shaw, released in 1988. Album background Shaw had released a couple of singles in the late 1970s on the CBS label, but did not show a serious interest in making additional material until the early 1980s, when new husband Nik Powell (co-founder of the Virgin Group) introduced her to the B.E.F. (British Electric Foundation). Shaw recorded an updated version of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic " Anyone Who Had a Heart" for their ''Music of Quality and Distinction'' album, which was subsequently released as a single.
