A Flower In Hell
''A Flower in Hell'' () is a 1958 South Korean film directed by Shin Sang-ok. For her performance in the film, Shin's wife, Choi Eun-hee was given the Best Actress award at the 2nd Buil Film Awards. During the Korean War, director Shin Sang-ok had shared an apartment with a prostitute in order to live more comfortably rather than sharing a one-room evacuation apartment with several families, giving him insight in the subject of the film. Plot Two weeks after leaving the army, Dong-shik (Cho Hae-won), arrives in post-Korean War Seoul in search of his brother, Yeong-shik (Kim Hak-a), hoping to bring him back home to take care of their mother. The city is destitute, with few jobs, high crime, a huge American military presence, and a thriving black market economy. Shin Sang-ok
Shin Sang-ok ( ko, 신상옥; born Shin Tae-seo; October 11, 1926 – April 11, 2006) was a South Korean filmmaker with more than 100 producer and 70 director credits to his name. His best-known films were made in the 1950s and 60s, many of them collaborations with his wife Choi Eun-hee, when he was known as "The Prince of South Korean Cinema". He received the Order of Cultural Merit (South Korea), Gold Crown Cultural Medal, the country's top honor for an artist. In 1978, Shin and Choi were Abduction of Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee, kidnapped by North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, for the purpose of producing critically acclaimed films. The two remained in captivity for 8 years until 1986, when they escaped and sought asylum in the United States. Shin continued to produce and direct films in America, now under the pseudonym "Simon Sheen", before eventually returning to South Korea for his final years. Choi Eun-hee
Choi Eun-hee (; November 20, 1926 – April 16, 2018) was a South Korean actress, who was one of the country's most popular stars of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1978, Choi and her then ex-husband, movie director Shin Sang-ok, were abducted to North Korea, where they were forced to make films until they sought asylum at the U.S. embassy in Vienna in 1986. They returned to South Korea in 1999 after spending a decade in the United States. Biography Early career and success in South Korea Choi was born in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province in 1926. Her first acting role was in the 1947 film, ''A New Oath''. The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) () is a state-supported, self-administered organization under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) of the Republic of Korea. History KOFIC was launched in 1973 as the Korean Motion Picture Promotion Corporation (KMPPC). It changed its name to Korean Film Commission in 1999, to be set up as a self-regulating body that could institute film policy without requiring the ratification of the Ministry of Culture. It changed its name once more to Korean Film Council in 2004 to avoid confusion with local film commissions that provide support for location shooting. The Buil Film Awards () is a South Korean film awards ceremony hosted by the ''Busan Ilbo'' newspaper. It began in 1958 as one of the earliest film awards in the country. During the 1950s and 1960s, it was the biggest film awards event in the Busan region, and was held annually until 1973. The event went into a 34-year hiatus from 1974 to 2007 when the film industry lost its appeal due to government censorship and the burgeoning television industry.
