A Figure In Hiding
''A Figure in Hiding'' is Volume 16 in the original The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories published by Grosset & Dunlap. This book was written for the Stratemeyer Syndicate by Leslie McFarlane in 1937. Between 1959 and 1973 the first 38 volumes of this series were systematically revised as part of a project directed by Harriet Adams, Edward Stratemeyer's daughter. The original version of this book was rewritten in 1965 by James D. Fenton Hardy
Many characters have appeared in the fictional series of books about The Hardy Boys. Character history Original series At the beginning of the original Hardy Boys series, Frank is only 16 years old (as opposed to 18 after the revisions between 1959 and 1974) and both he and Joe want to follow in their famous father, Fenton Hardy's footsteps as detectives. When the father of one of their school friends is wrongly accused of stealing, the Hardy boys take it upon themselves to clear his name and solve the mystery. Torpedo (car)
The torpedo body style was a type of automobile body used from 1908 until the mid-1930s, which had a streamlined profile and a folding or detachable soft top. The design consists of a hood or bonnet line raised to be level with the car's waistline, resulting in a straight beltline from front to back. The name was introduced in 1908 when Captain Theo Masui, the London-based importer of French Gregoire cars, designed a streamlined body and called it "The Torpedo". Hydrofoil
A hydrofoil is a lifting surface, or foil, that operates in water. They are similar in appearance and purpose to aerofoils used by aeroplanes. Boats that use hydrofoil technology are also simply termed hydrofoils. As a hydrofoil craft gains speed, the hydrofoils lift the boat's hull out of the water, decreasing drag and allowing greater speeds. The Hardy Boys, brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, are fictional characters who appear in several mystery series for children and teens. The series revolves around teenagers who are amateur sleuths, solving cases that stumped their adult counterparts. The characters were created by American writer Edward Stratemeyer, the founder of book-packaging firm Stratemeyer Syndicate. The books themselves were written by several ghostwriters, most notably Leslie McFarlane, under the collective pseudonym Franklin W. Dixon. The Hardy Boys have evolved since their debut in 1927. James Duncan Lawrence (author)
James Duncan Lawrence ( – ), best known as Jim Lawrence, was an American author best known for authoring most of the Tom Swift Jr. series of books (under the pseudonym Victor Appleton II) and Friday Foster comic strip. Biography Lawrence was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1918. As a freelance writer in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he wrote scripts for a number of radio shows, including The Green Hornet and Sergeant Preston of the Yukon. In the 1950s and 1960s, he worked for the Stratemeyer Syndicate on a number of series (listed in the Bibliography). In the 1970s, he worked for the Chicago Tribune and the New York News Syndicate with illustrator Jordi Longarón on Friday Foster comic strip. Later in his career, Lawrence co-wrote two Infocom interactive fiction games with Stu Galley: Seastalker (1984) and Moonmist (1986). Lawrence died in Summit, New Jersey in 1994.
