''A City Called Copenhagen'' ( da, En by ved navn København) is a 1960 Danish short documentary film directed by Jørgen Roos. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. The film received positive reception. Synopsis The film documents Copenhagen which includes its buildings, sights, and citizens. Production It took a long time to commission and fund the film, which is referenced in the film and is "an example of its use of humour". The film was produced using Eastmancolor film stock. The group that commissioned the production disliked the content which resulted in it not being released until two years later, but it received positive reception upon release. The film's success gave Roos more opportunities to produce films within more countries. Similar to the director's next two films, ''A City Called Copenhagen'' has to do with the lives of citizens and walking throughout the city. Elsa Gress
Elsa Judith Elisa Gress (17 January 1919 – 18 July 1988) was a Danish essayist, novelist and dramatist. In Denmark, she is remembered above all for her essays. Biography Born in Frederikshavn, Gress was brought up in Ordrup where her father lost the family fortune at the races. She went through a difficult childhood as the family was forced to move frequently from one home to another. After matriculating from Ordrup Gymnasium in 1937, she studied literature at Copenhagen University. During the Second World War, she participated in the resistance, narrowly avoiding capture on one occasion. As a result of the war atrocities, both her boyfriend and her brother Palle committed suicide, causing her great pain. Her debut consisted of a volume of essays, ''Strejftog'' (Raids, 1947), and a novel, ''Mellemspil'' (Interlude, 1947), both inspired by her war experiences and her subsequent grief. The Danish Film Institute ( da, Det Danske Filminstitut) is the national Danish agency responsible for supporting and encouraging film and cinema culture, and for conserving these in the national interest.
