A Boy Named Sue (film)
''A Boy Named Sue'' is a 2001 documentary film directed by Julie Wyman. It shows the life and transition of Theo, a trans man, transgender man who undergoes various stages of transition (including a mastectomy and hormone therapy). The protagonist is filmed extensively throughout, gives a number of interviews, and eventually settles down as a gay male. The film's title is taken from the song ''A Boy Named Sue''. Distribution and reception The film played at several festivals including the 2000 San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and Reel Affirmations. Women Make Movies
Women Make Movies is a non-profit feminist media arts organization based in New York City. Founded by Ariel Dougherty and Sheila Paige with Dolores Bargowski, WMM was first a feminist production collective that emerged from city-wide Women's Liberation meetings in September 1969. They produced four films by 1973. Dougherty and Paige incorporated the organization in March 1972 as a community based workshop to teach film to everyday women. A distribution service was also begun as an earned income program. In the mid-1970s a membership was created that screened and distributed members' work. In the early 1980s focus shifted to concentrate on distribution of independent films by and about women. WMM also provides production assistance to women filmmakers. GLAAD Media Awards
The GLAAD Media Award is an accolade bestowed by GLAAD to recognize and honor various branches of the media for their outstanding representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives. In addition to film and television, the Awards also recognize achievements in other branches of the media and arts, including theatre, music, journalism and advertising. Julie Wyman
Julie Wyman is an American director, cinematographer, and professor whose work is concerned with body image. She mainly makes documentary film and currently teaches at UC Davis as an associate professor of Cinema and Digital Media. Early life and education Julie Wyman received a BA in Anthropology and English from Amherst College in 1993. She completed a MFA in Visual Studies at UC San Diego in 2002. Reel Affirmations (RA) is a non-profit, all-volunteer LGBT film festival in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1991 and held every year in mid-October, as of 2011 Reel Affirmations was one of the largest LGBT film festivals (in terms of attendance) in the United States.
