''A Blue Gum Romance'' is a 1913 Australian silent film directed by Franklyn Barrett. It is considered a lost film. Plot The film was described as "a Sensational Story of Love, jealousy and revenge". Cast *Tien Hogue as heroine *Tom Middleton as hero *Douglas Lotherington as aboriginal chief Production It was the first narrative film from the Fraser Film Release and Photographic Company. The film was set in the timber industry area near Gosford and Wooy, although interiors were shot in Sydney. The aboriginal characters were played by white actors in blackface. Filming was completed by July 1913. Reception The film was popular at the local box office and screened in England and the USA. A contemporary review said the film "seemed to find favour with the spectators." The film was picked up for distribution in the US by the Essanay Company and "met with success". Franklyn Barrett
Walter Franklyn Barrett (1873 – 16 July 1964), better known as Franklyn Barrett, was an Australian film director and cinematographer. He worked for a number of years for West's Pictures. He was a professional violin player and amateur photographer and claims to have seen the first exhibit of motion pictures at the Empire Theatre in London. Barrett moved to New Zealand with his brother and father to work as a clerk for the latter. He began to experiment with shooting movies, and in 1901 won a prize of £15 for some of his photos. ''The Sunday Times'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia from 1885 to 1930. History ''The Sunday Times'' was founded by W. H. Leighton Bailey. It was first published on 15 November 1885 by Charles Mark Curtiss, and ceased with no. 2389 on 1 June 1930. ''The Sunday Times'' was controlled by the Evans family for over 30 years, until 1916 when the Sunday Times Newspaper Company, as well as the company's premises, were sold to Hugh D. McIntosh. In 1927, McIntosh sold his holdings in the Sunday Times Newspaper Company to Beckett's Newspapers, with J. H. C. Sleeman as Managing Director. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." Tien Hogue
Tien Hogue was the stage name of Anne Christina Hogue (29 June 1892 – November 1964), an Australian actress of stage and screen in the silent era. She was a popular personality, who, though marriage, became Lady Wyatt. Family The fourth daughter, and youngest child of James Alexander Hogue (1846–1920), and Jessie Hogue (1853–1932), '' née'' Robards, Anne Christina Hogue was born at Glebe Point, Sydney, New South Wales on 29 June 1892. She was the sister of Major Oliver Hogue (1880–1919), who wrote under the name of Trooper Blue Gum, and of John Roland Hogue (1882–1958), the talented professional singer (baritone), Broadway, film, and U.S.television actor, and playwright. She married Guy Wyatt (1893–1981) of the British Navy, later Vice-Admiral Sir Arthur Guy Norris Wyatt, K.B., C.B. on 19 January 1922, and moved to England. The couple later settled in Tasmania.
