AWGIE Award For Music Theatre
The AWGIE Award for Music Theatre is awarded by the Australian Writers Guild at the annual AWGIE Awards for Australian performance writing. The award is for the script/text, lyrics or book of works written for the theatre in which music plays an integral part, such as opera libretti, musicals, revue, musical theatre, theatre restaurant and original cabaret. The Australian Writers' Guild (AWG) is the professional association for Australian performance writers for film, television, radio, theatre, video and new media. The AWG was established in 1962. The AWG is a member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. The AWG gives writers a political voice by lobbying government on such issues as copyright protection and the provision of support for film and theatre funding bodies and the ABC and protecting Australian content. The AWG is a democratic organisation run by its members, who each year elect a National Executive Council and State Branch Committees. The Rabbits
''The Rabbits'' is a music theatre work with music by Kate Miller-Heidke and libretto by Lally Katz (with additional music by Iain Grandage), based on the book by John Marsden illustrated by Shaun Tan. As per the original book, it is an allegory for the colonisation of Australia, depicting an invasion of rabbits (in lieu of the English settlers) described as alien, harsh and greedy, as they destroy the land and lives of the native marsupials (in lieu of the original Indigenous population). Justin Fleming (born 3 January 1953) is an Australian playwright, librettist and author. He has written for theatre, music theatre, opera, television and cinema and his works have been produced and published in Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, Belgium, Poland and France. Fleming has been a barrister and vice president of the Australian Writers' Guild and a board member of the Australian National Playwrights' Centre. He is a member of the Honorable Society of King’s Inns, Dublin. ''Fangirls'' (stylised in all uppercase) is an Australian stage musical with book, music and lyrics by Yve Blake. It concerns 14-year-old Edna, a diehard fan of the biggest boy band in the world, True Connection, and its lead singer Harry. It was inspired by interviews with hundreds of teenage fangirls. The original production premiered on September 7, 2019, at Queensland Theatre before transferring to Belvoir St Theatre in Sydney on October 12, 2019, where it sold out. In 2021, ''Fangirls'' returned for a national tour of Australia. ''Fangirls'' received critical acclaim. ''Vigil'' is a one-woman Australian musical with book and lyrics by Steve Vizard and music by Joe Chindamo. Synopsis An exploration of mother-daughter relationships with comedy and drama, the musical concerns Liz, a prodigal daughter who returns to her mother's hospital ward on Christmas Eve after a long time overseas. Stephen William Vizard AM (born 6 March 1956) is an Australian television and radio presenter, producer, writer, lawyer and businessman. He is an adjunct professor at Monash University and University of Adelaide. Ursula Yovich is an Aboriginal Australian actress and singer. Early life and education Yovich was born and grew up in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Alana Valentine
Alana Valentine is an Australian playwright, dramatist, librettist and Director working in theatre, film, opera and television. As a playwright, she won the Helpmann Award. Valentine first worked with Vicki Gordon Music Productions to create the First Nations show Barefoot Divas, Walk a Mile in My Shoes. The work premiered at the Sydney Festival in 2012 and the Wellington International Arts Festival in 2013 touring the USA and Canada in 2014 before selling out the Hong Kong International Arts Festival in 2015. Stig Erik Leopold Anderson (25 January 1931 – 12 September 1997), better known as Stikkan Anderson, was a Swedish music manager, lyricist and music publisher. He was the co-founder of Polar Music, and is best known for managing the Swedish pop band ABBA. Early life Stig Anderson was born on 25 January 1931 in Hova, Sweden, the son of a single mother named Ester. Anderson began his career as a chemistry and mathematics teacher at a primary school, by taking night classes after leaving school at the age of 15. Björn Kristian Ulvaeus (; born 25 April 1945) is a Swedish singer, songwriter, producer, a member of the musical group ABBA, and co-composer of the musicals ''Chess'', '' Kristina från Duvemåla'', and '' Mamma Mia!''
