Olaine
Olaine (; german: Olai) is a city in Olaine Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. Olaine gained town rights in 1967. The name comes from the Saint Olai Church, built by the Misa river under Swedish rule in the 17th century. An old cemetery remains at this site. After 1868, a railway stop "Olai" was built on the Riga-Mitau line. After Latvian independence, in 1919 "Olai" was renamed to "Olaine", in line with the Latvianisation of topological names all over Latvia. The population in 2020 was 10,668. The history of Olaine is closely connected to a nearby peat bog first taken into use in 1940. Thereafter, more production facilities were built, increasing numbers of workers needed accommodation, and the first dwellings were built in what is currently known as Olaine. Previously, Olaine was the name of a village just two kilometers away. This village now has the name of Jaunolaine (''New Olaine''). The Latvian First League ( lv, Latvijas Pirmā līga, 1. līga) is the second tier of football in Latvia and is organised by the Latvian Football Federation. History The league was founded together with other Latvian football competitions in 1992. From 2007 to 2008, the tournament was known as the Traffic 1. līga, due to its first sponsorship deal concluded with the "Traffic auto advert" advertising company. The Latvian Football Cup () is the main knockout cup competition in Latvian football. Since 2021, its full name is Responsible Game Latvian Football Cup (''Atbildīgas spēles Latvijas kauss'') due to the sponsorship by sports betting company William Hill. The tournament was launched in 1937, replacing the previous knockout tournament – the Riga Football Cup. The competition is a knockout (single elimination) tournament. From 1937 to 2008 and again since 2017, all of the games of the tournament are played within the year. During the Soviet occupation ( 1940–1941, 1944–1991) it served as a qualification tournament for the Soviet Cup. The competition was also fully played once during the German occupation of the Baltic states, in 1943. Vugar Askerov
Vüqar Asgarov ( az, Vüqar Əsgərov; born 14 May 1985 in Sumgayit) is an Azerbaijani football second striker who currently plays for SK Super Nova. He also holds Latvian citizenship. Career Vüqar Asgarov was born in Azerbaijan, but moved to Latvia in an early age. Vüqar Asgarov began his career in Liepājas Metalurgs system and there he played until 2008. Later he played for Latvian First League clubs FK Jelgava and FC Jūrmala. In 2010, Äsgärov joined another Latvian First League side SFK Varavīksne and after scoring a goal against Metalurgs in Latvian Cup, he was invited to join them. After three years with Liepājas Metalurgs, he left Latvia and signed for Azerbaijani club Sumgayit a two-year contract.
