ABC Darwin
ABC Radio Darwin (call sign: 8DDD) is an ABC radio station which is located in Darwin, Northern Territory. It is one of the stations in the ABC Local Radio network and broadcasts on 105.7MHz on the FM dial. It is an Australian Government sponsored station and is run through the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. History In 1947, the ABC took over an old Army station, 5DR, and relaunched it as its first station in the Northern Territory. In the early days, its staffers lived in huts without air conditioning, and most programming was flown up on discs. Since there was only one newspaper in the area, 5DR frequently broadcast funeral arrangements because the Northern Territory's humid climate made it impossible to keep a body for any long period of time. FM Radio

NTD is an Australian television station, licensed to and serving Darwin, Palmerston and surrounding areas. The station is owned and operated by the Nine Entertainment Co., and is an owned-and-operated station of the Nine Network, under the company name ''Territory Television Pty. Ltd.'' The station is known for being the only commercial television network in the Northern Territory to broadcast a full Darwin news bulletin on weeknights. Shortwave Radio
Shortwave radio is radio transmission using shortwave (SW) radio frequencies. There is no official definition of the band, but the range always includes all of the high frequency band (HF), which extends from 3 to 30 MHz (100 to 10 metres); above the medium frequency band (MF), to the bottom of the VHF band. Radio waves in the shortwave band can be reflected or refracted from a layer of electrically charged atoms in the atmosphere called the ionosphere. Therefore, short waves directed at an angle into the sky can be reflected back to Earth at great distances, beyond the horizon. This is called skywave or "skip" propagation. 783 ABC Alice Springs
783 ABC Alice Springs (call sign: 8AL) is the ABC Local Radio station in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. It broadcasts on 783 kilohertz, kHz on the amplitude modulation, AM band, with low-powered relay stations across the Northern Territory Outback. The station was officially opened as 5AL on 30 November 1948 as a member of the ABC Regional Network relaying programmes out of Adelaide, and transmitting on a frequency of 1530 kHz. The callsign was changed to 8AL in 1960 and transmitting frequency to 783 in 1978. Employment of local journalists began around 1970. The station originates four local programs during the week: ''Breakfast'' with Stewart Brash, ''Mornings'' with Nadine Maloney, ''Drive'' with Tim Brunero and ''Saturday Breakfast'' with Antony Yoffa. Cyclone Tracy
Cyclone Tracy was a tropical cyclone that devastated the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, from 24 to 26 December 1974. The small, developing easterly storm had been observed passing clear of the city initially, but then turned towards it early on 24 December. After 10:00 p.m. ACST, damage became severe, and wind gusts reached before instruments failed. The anemometer in Darwin Airport control tower had its needle bent in half by the strength of the gusts. Residents of Darwin were celebrating Christmas, and did not immediately acknowledge the emergency, partly because they had been alerted to an earlier cyclone ( Selma) that passed west of the city, and did not affect it in any way.
