ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) is an ATM adaptation layer used to send variable-length Packet (information technology), packets up to 65,535 Octet (computing), octets in size across an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. Unlike most network frames, which place control information in the Header (computing), header, AAL5 places control information in an 8-octet Trailer (information technology), trailer at the end of the packet. The AAL5 trailer contains a 16-bit length Field (computer science), field, a 32-bit cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and two 8-bit fields labeled ''UU'' and ''CPI'' that are currently unused. Each AAL5 packet is divided into an integral number of ATM cells and reassembled into a packet before delivery to the receiving host (network), host. Multiprotocol Encapsulation Over ATM
Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM is specified in RFC 2684. It defines two mechanisms for identifying the Communications protocol, protocol carried in ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) frames. It replaces RFC 1483, a standard data link access protocol supported by DSL modems. RFC 2684 describes two Encapsulation (networking), encapsulation mechanisms for network traffic: Virtual Circuit Multiplexing and LLC Encapsulation. Either mechanism carries either ''Routing, routed'' or ''Bridging (networking), bridged'' protocol data units, and DSL modems often include a setting for RFC 1483 bridging. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a telecommunications standard defined by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and ITU-T (formerly CCITT) for digital transmission of multiple types of traffic. Virtual Circuit Multiplexing
Virtual circuit multiplexing or VC-MUX is one of the two (the other being LLC encapsulation) mechanisms for identifying the protocol carried in ATM Adaptation Layer 5 (AAL5) frames specified by {{IETF RFC, 2684, Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM. With virtual circuit multiplexing, the communicating hosts agree to send only one packets belonging to a single high-level protocol on any given ATM virtual circuit, and multiple virtual circuits may need to be set up. It has the advantage of not requiring additional protocol-identifying information in a packet, which minimizes the overhead. For example, if the hosts agree to transfer IP, a sender can pass each datagram directly to AAL5 to transfer, nothing needs to be sent besides the datagram and the AAL5 trailer. ATM Adaptation Layer
The use of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology and services creates the need for an adaptation layer in order to support information transfer protocols, which are not based on ATM. This adaptation layer defines how to segment higher-layer packets into cells and the reassembly of these packets. Additionally, it defines how to handle various transmission aspects in the ATM layer. Segmentation And Reassembly
Segmentation and reassembly (SAR) is the process used to fragment and reassemble variable length packets into fixed length cells so as to allow them to be transported across Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks or other cell based infrastructures. Since ATM's payload is only 48 bytes, nearly every packet from any other protocol has to be processed in this way. Thus, it is an essential process for any ATM node. It is usually handled by a dedicated chip, called the SAR. The process is conceptually simple: an incoming packet from another protocol to be transmitted across the ATM network is chopped up into segments that fit into 48-byte chunks carried as ATM cell payloads. In information technology, a trailer or footer refers to supplemental data (metadata) placed at the end of a block of data being stored or transmitted, which may contain information for the handling of the data block, or simply mark the block's end. In data transmission, the data following the end of the header and preceding the start of the trailer is called the payload or body. Cyclic Redundancy Check
A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is an error-detecting code commonly used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to digital data. Blocks of data entering these systems get a short ''check value'' attached, based on the remainder of a polynomial division of their contents. On retrieval, the calculation is repeated and, in the event the check values do not match, corrective action can be taken against data corruption. CRCs can be used for error correction (see bitfilters). CRCs are so called because the ''check'' (data verification) value is a ''redundancy'' (it expands the message without adding information) and the algorithm is based on ''cyclic'' codes.
