A4e (''Action for Employment'') was a for-profit, welfare-to-work company based in the United Kingdom. The company began in Sheffield in 1991 with the objective to provide redundant steelworkers with the training required to obtain new jobs. They operated in five countries, but retained a significant presence in the UK where they worked with organisations in the public sector such as the Department for Work and Pensions. In the wake of various controversies and criminal investigations, MPs Fiona Mactaggart and former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Margaret Hodge urged the UK government to suspend contracts with A4e. Emma Harrison (entrepreneur)
Emma Louise Harrison CBE (née Cridland), (born 13 August 1963) was a key shareholder of A4e (Action for employment) and the company's chairperson until 24 February 2012. Harrison's father, Roy Cridland, founded the company A4e before appointing Harrison as a director of the business in 1991 when the company was worth £125,000. Biography She is a graduate engineer (BEng) of the University of Bradford. She was appointed as a voluntary troubled families 'Family Champion' by Prime Minister David Cameron in 2010, despite civil servants recommending propriety and ethics checks on her. Harrison resigned from the post on 23 February 2012, following allegations of fraud at A4e and controversy over her £8.6m personal dividend payment. Work Programme (United Kingdom)
The Work Programme (WP) was a UK government welfare-to-work programme introduced in Great Britain in June 2011. It was the flagship welfare-to-work scheme of the 2010–2015 UK coalition government. Under the Work Programme the task of getting the long-term unemployed into work was outsourced to a range of public sector, private sector and third sector organisations. The scheme replaced a range of schemes which existed under previous New Labour governments including Employment Zones, New Deal, Flexible New Deal and the now abolished Future Jobs Fund scheme which aimed to tackle youth unemployment. Skills Funding Agency
The Skills Funding Agency was one of two successor organisations that emerged from the closure in 2010 of the Learning and Skills Council (England's largest non-departmental public body or quango). The agency was in turn replaced by the Education and Skills Funding Agency in 2017. The restructuring of the English skills system was announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown shortly after he took office in 2007. The office of the Chief Executive of Skills Funding was established in law by the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009.
