British Academy
The British Academy is the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and the social sciences. It was established in 1902 and received its royal charter in the same year. It is now a fellowship of more than 1,000 leading scholars spanning all disciplines across the humanities and social sciences and a funding body for research projects across the United Kingdom. The academy is a self-governing and independent registered charity, based at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace in London. The British Academy is funded with an annual grant from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). In 2014–15, the British Academy's total income was £33,100,000, including £27,000,000 from BIS. £32,900,000 was distributed during the year in research grants, awards and charitable activities. Lea Ypi (born 8 September 1979) is an Albanian author and academic. She is a professor of political theory at the London School of Economics. She is a member of the jury of the Deutscher Memorial Prize. Personal life Ypi was born in Tirana, the eldest child of Xhaferr Ypi and Vjollca Veli who were relatively regular citizens under communist rule, but who later became involved in Albanian democratic politics in Ypi's late childhood prior to the Albanian civil war in 1997. She grew up in both communist and post-communist Albania, the experience of this transition being the main topic of her book 'Free: Coming of Age at the End of History' (2021). Though her family were compelled to be atheist under communist rule, her family was historically Muslim. Ypi herself says she is now agnostic. Brian Barry, (7 August 1936 – 10 March 2009) was a moral and political philosopher. He was educated at the Queen's College, Oxford, obtaining the degrees of B.A. and D.Phil. under the direction of H. L. A. Hart. Along with David Braybrooke, Richard E. Flathman, Felix Oppenheim, and Abraham Kaplan, he is widely credited with having fused analytic philosophy and political science. Barry also fused political theory and social choice theory and was a persistent critic of public choice theory.
