Avis (), formerly spelled Aviz, is a Municipalities of Portugal, municipality in the District of Portalegre (district), Portalegre in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 4,571, in an area of 605.97 km2. The present Mayor is Nuno Silva, elected by the Unitary Democratic Coalition. The municipal holiday is Easter Monday. History The fortified city, of which parts have been preserved, was home to the Order of Aviz, Knights of the Order of Aviz. The Imperial Order of St. Benedict of Avis ( pt, Imperial Ordem de São Bento de Avis) is an old Brazilian military order, originated from the Portuguese Military Order of Aviz, which in turn dates back to the medieval Order of Saint Benedict of Avis. This medieval order apparently originated in Spain from the Order of Calatrava; another theory reports that it originated in Portugal in the twelfth century under King Afonso Henriques. The chancellery that took care of the records of the Brazilian order belonged to the Ministry of the Empire. Its religious character was deprived by means of Decree of 9 September 1843. It was maintained after the proclamation of the Republic, together with the Imperial Order of the Southern Cross, by determination of Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, by decree no. 227F of 22 of March 1890.
