Avi Cohen (footballer, Born 1962)
Avraham "Avi" Cohen (born 12 June 1962) is an Israeli former footballer who played as a right back. He is often referred as Avi Cohen II or Avi Cohen of Jerusalem to distinguish himself from the player of the same name, born in 1956. Career Cohen began his career at Beitar Jerusalem, initially as a striker, but moved back to the right back position. Because of this, he was noted for his attacking skills, and was one of the first players in Israel to adopt the style of the attacking defender. He left Beitar in 1985 to join Maccabi Sha'arayim, but returned a season later. He would remain there until the summer of 1989, where he was signed by Maccabi Tel Aviv. It was at Maccabi where he would be known as Avi Cohen of Jerusalem, as Avi Cohen became his teammate (albeit briefly, as he would leave to join Maccabi Netanya the following year). The 1994–95 Liga Leumit season began on 27 August 1994 and ended on 27 May 1995, with Maccabi Tel Aviv winning the title. That season had two rounds, each team played the other teams twice. The two teams that were relegated to Liga Artzit were: Maccabi Netanya and Maccabi Ironi Ashdod. The Israel State Cup ( he, גביע המדינה, ''Gvia HaMedina''), is a knockout cup competition in Israeli football, run by the Israel Football Association (IFA). The State Cup was first held in 1928 as the People's Cup. Because it involves clubs of all standards playing against each other, there is the possibility for "minnows" from the lower divisions to become "giant-killers" by eliminating top clubs from the tournament, although lower division teams rarely reach the final. The current holders of the State Cup are the Israeli Premier League club Hapoel Haifa, who beat Beitar Jerusalem in the 2018 final on May 9, 2018. Maccabi Tel Aviv have 23 titles, having the record for most titles won. Hapoel Tel Aviv in 1937–1939 and 2010–2012 are the only club to have retained the State Cup for three consecutive seasons.
