Nicolás de Pierola Avenue ( es, Avenida Nicolás de Piérola), popularly known as La Colmena, is an avenue located in the Historic Centre of Lima, Peru. It is the southern limit of the area called '' Damero de Pizarro''. It was founded in the year 1900. History Its journey from west to east covers 17 blocks. It was named in honor of former President Nicolás de Piérola since it was in 1898 during his government that this road was inaugurated as part of the works to modernize the layout of the city. For much of the 20th century it was an aristocratic street in the city, which is still reflected in its republican-style buildings that resemble Avenida de Mayo in Buenos Aires. Jose Nicolás Baltasar Fernández de Piérola y Villena (known as "''El Califa''" ("The Caliph"); January 5, 1839 – June 23, 1913) was a Peruvian politician and Minister of Finance of Peru, Minister of Finance who served as the 23rd and 31st List of Presidents of Peru, President of the Republic of Peru, from 1879 to 1881 and 1895 to 1899. Early years Nicolás de Piérola was born and educated in the southern Peruvian city of Arequipa. He moved to Lima to study theology at the ''Seminario de Santo Toribio'', and later obtained his law degree from the Faculty of Law. His parents died in 1857. The Four Quarters March or Four Suyos March ( es, Marcha de los Cuatro Suyos) was a popular mobilization and later riots held in Peru on July 26, 27 and 28, 2000. The march was organized in opposition of Alberto Fujimori's third consecutive election as president of Peru and its last day coincided with Fujimori's inauguration. The Javier Alzamora Valdez Building ( es, Edificio Javier Alzamora Valdez) is located in the historic center of Lima, Peru. It stands at the intersection of Abancay and Colmena avenues, next to the University Park. Formerly the headquarters of the Ministry of Education, it's the main location of the Superior Court of Justice of Lima, part of the Judiciary of Peru. University Park is a public park located in the historic centre of the city of Lima, Peru. It is rectangular in shape and is located at the intersection of and avenues. History It receives its name because of the historic headquarters of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, also known as the "Casona" and which until the last decades of the 19th century was the home of the viceregal , is located there, currently a cultural center. The university settled in said premises in the mid-1870s, leaving its viceregal headquarters permanently occupied by the Chamber of Deputies (current Congress of the Republic). The German Tower ( es, Torre Alemana), also known as the Clock Tower ( es, Torre del Reloj) or the University Clock ( es, Reloj Universitario), is a clock tower in the historic centre of Lima, Peru. The Gran Hotel Bolívar, is a historic hotel located on Plaza San Martín in Lima, Peru. Designed by noted Peruvian architect Rafael Marquina, it was built in 1924 and was the first large, modern hotel built in Lima. Part of a program to modernize Lima, the hotel was constructed on what was state property. The hotel was inaugurated on December 6, 1924, in honor of the centenary of the Battle of Ayacucho, a decisive military encounter during the Peruvian War of Independence. The Casa Marcionelli was a historical residential and commercial building located near San Martín Plaza, in Lima. The 3-story building was destroyed in 2023 by a fire during a series of protests in its immediate surroundings. The building was named after its first owner, Severino Marcionelli. History The building's area was bought by Italian Swiss businessman and philanthropist Severino Marcionelli ( Bironico, 1869 – Lima, 1957), originally from Ticino, alongside his business partner, José Di Luka Hanza Pericevic, originally from Cannosa, Dalmatia. The Plaza San Martín is one of the most representative public spaces of the city of Lima, Peru. It is located at the ninth block of Avenida Nicolás de Piérola, Colmena avenue, within the Historic Centre of Lima which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1988 by UNESCO. Plaza Dos De Mayo
The May 2nd Square ( es, Plaza Dos de Mayo) is a square located in the historic center of Lima. Its construction was commissioned by the Peruvian government in the 1870s to commemorate the Battle of Callao, which had taken place on May 2, 1866. It was built over a previous square known as the Oval of the Queen ( es, Óvalo de la Reina), located near the gates of the city, which had since been overrun by urban growth. The square is dominated by a central monument, built in France and reassembled in Peru between 1873 and 1874, allowing the square to be inaugurated in July 1874. The architect was Edmond Guillaume; the sculptor of the finial figure of Nike and the historical and allegorical bronzes was Louis-Léon Cugnot.
