''Austrominius modestus'' ( syn. ''Elminius modestus'') is a species of barnacle in the family Elminiidae, native to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, but now spread to Britain and the north west coasts of Europe. It reaches a maximum size of about in diameter. Description ''A. modestus'' is a pearly grey, semi-translucent barnacle. It is composed of four distinct plates and leans a little to one side. Distribution and habitat ''A. modestus'' originated in Australia and was first seen in British waters, in Chichester Harbour, during the Second World War. It was believed to have arrived on the hulls of ships, or possibly the larval stages travelled in bilge water. It has become very common in southern England and Wales and is spreading northwards, but the spread may be limited by the temperature of the sea. ''Semibalanus balanoides'' (common barnacle, common rock barnacle, northern rock barnacle) is a common and widespread boreo-arctic species of acorn barnacle. It is common on rocks and other substrates in the intertidal zone of north-western Europe and both coasts of North America. Description Adult ''S. balanoides'' grow up to in diameter, and are sessile, living attached to rocks and other solid substrates. They have six greyish wall plates surrounding a diamond-shaped operculum. The base of the shell is membranous in ''Semibalanus,'' unlike other barnacles which have calcified bases. Margaret Barnes (marine Biologist)
Margaret Barnes (26 August 1919 – 30 October 2009) was a British marine biologist. She was born in Manchester and grew up in Wales and England. She received a BSc from the University of London in 1939. Originally trained in chemistry, during World War II, she worked on colloidal graphite lubricants. She received a MSc in 1945 from the University of London. Also in 1945, she married Harold Barnes, also a chemist who later pursued marine biology. Barnes and her husband came to be recognized as world authorities on barnacle biology. She moved to the Scottish Marine Biological Association (later the Scottish Association for Marine Science or SAMS) marine station at Millport to join her husband in 1945. ''Balanus'' is a genus of barnacles in the family Balanidae of the subphylum Crustacea. This genus is known in the fossil record from the Jurassic to the Quaternary periods (age range: from 189.6 to 0.0 million years ago.). Fossil shells within this genus have been found all over the world. Description The bodies of these organisms are totally enclosed by a stony gray-whitish shell.
