Australian Men's Curling Championship
The Australian Men's Curling Championship is the national curling championship of men's curling in Australia. The winners of the tournament represent Australia at the Pan Continental Curling Championships (previously the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships). The event is organized by the Australian Curling Federation. The event is normally held in Naseby, New Zealand, as Australia currently lacks a dedicated curling facility. Naseby, New Zealand
Naseby is a small town, formerly a borough, in the Maniototo area of Central Otago, New Zealand. It is named after a village in Northamptonshire, England. Previous names of the township were Parker's, Hogburn and Mt Ida. The town catch phrase is "2000 feet above worry level" indicating its altitude. Naseby is 395 km (5 hours drive) from Christchurch and 143 km (1 hour 45 minutes drive) from Dunedin. An important township during the gold rush of the 1860s, Gold was discovered in the Hogburn in 1863. Much of the town has been preserved from this time and has something of the air of a working museum. At its peak, the population of the town was around 4,000 miners. Eighteen stores, 14 hotels, two butchers and a hospital had also been built to service the miners. In 1898, a railway line was constructed 12 km away in Ranfurly and as a result services gradually moved away from Naseby to Ranfurly. Trevor Schumm
Trevor Schumm (born c. 1967) is a Canadian-Australian curler and baseball coach and scout. At the international level, he is a curler; the team, skipped by Hugh Millikin represented Australia at the 1998 World Men's Curling Championships. Schumm grew up on a farm near Spruce Grove, Alberta. He played baseball, ice hockey and Canadian football in his youth, and was the quarterback of his high school's football team. He then played junior college baseball at Allan Hancock College, played in spring training for the California Angels, and both played and coached at Cornell University. The returned to Alberta to coach there, and then moved to Australia in 1995, taking a job with the Australian Capital Territory academy of sport, and worked as a youth baseball coach. In 2000, he coached the Australian team at the World Junior Baseball Championship. Andrew Butler (curler)
Andrew Pickens Butler (November 18, 1796May 25, 1857) was a United States senator from South Carolina who authored the Kansas-Nebraska Act with Senator Stephen Douglas of Illinois. In 1856, abolitionist senator Charles Sumner gave a speech in which he insulted Butler’s character. In response Preston Brooks, Butler’s first cousin once-removed, caned Sumner on the Senate floor, nearly killing him.
