Australia competed at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. A total number of 24 athletes competed, participating in alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, short track speed skating, and snowboarding, which appeared for the first time at the Olympics. Freestyle skiers Kirstie Marshall and Jacqui Cooper were some of Australia's best gold medal hopes, but both missed the aerials finals. Zali Steggall won Australia's first individual Winter Olympics medal, gaining bronze in slalom. The men's 15 kilometre freestyle pursuit cross-country skiing competition at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, was held on 14 February at Snow Harp. The startlist for this race was based on the 10 km classical event from earlier in the games. The winner of the 10 km classical event, Bjørn Dæhlie of Norway Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe, the mainland territory of which comprises the western and northernmost portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The rest of the competitors started behind Dæhlie with the same number of seconds that they were behind him at the 10 km classical event. Bjørn Dæhlie won the race, and memorably insisted that the medals ceremony be delayed as he waited at the finish line to greet the final athlete to complete the race, Philip Boit of Kenya, who was the first Kenyan to compete in a Winter Olympics. Anthony Evans (born 27 May 1969) is a former Australian cross-country skier, who represented Australia at three Olympics from the 1992 Winter Olympics to the 1998 Winter Olympics. At the 1992 Olympics, Evans competed in the 30 km classic, 15 km free pursuit and 10 km classic pursuit. He came 54th, 39th and 37th out of 82, 99 and 110 entrants. In 1994, he competed in the 50 km, 15 km free pursuit and 10 km classic. He came 47th, 57th and 51st out of 61, 74 and 88 entries. In 1994, he competed in the 50 km free pursuit, 30 km classic, 15 km free pursuit and 10 km classic. He came 48th, 51st, 55th and 66th out of 75, 72, 74 and 97 entries.
