Australia At The 1980 Summer Olympics
Australia competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, USSR. In partial support of the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics Australia competed under the Olympic Flag. 120 competitors, 92 men and 28 women, took part in 92 events in 17 sports. Flag bearers Denise Boyd (athletics) and Max Metzker (swimming), Australia’s first joint-flag carriers, carried the Olympic flag in the opening ceremony instead of the national flag. Countries marched in order of the Russian alphabet, and Australia was therefore second in the parade of nations, following Greece, which has traditionally led the march since 1928. Archery In the third Olympic archery competition that Australia contested, the nation sent two women and one man. Carole Toy, a veteran of the 1972 Games, repeated her 15th-place performance despite shooting 20 points lower. Debbie Wells
Debbie Wells (born 29 May 1961) is an Australian former sprinter who competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics, 1980 Summer Olympics, and the 1984 Summer Olympics. Wells was three times Australian 100 metre champion, and twice Australian 200m champion. She was 1977 Pacific Conference champion in the relay, and placed 2nd in both the 100m and 200m. Wells is from Emmaville, New South Wales, and was known as the "Emmaville Express." She competed in the 1976 Olympics at 15 years of age. She finished fourth in the first qualifying round of the 100 meters. She went through to the second round, where she finished fifth behind Vera Anisimova of the USSR. She also competed in the 4 X 100 relay in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She is one of only a few Australians who competed at three Olympic games. Peter Hadfield
Peter Robert Hadfield (born 21 January 1955) is an Australian Olympic athlete who competed in the decathlon. Hadfield won a total of nine Australian Championships in Athletics between 1976 and 1985. He didn't compete in the National Championships in 1978 as he was living in Paris at the time, training there for the Edmonton Commonwealth Games. He was the best decathlete in Australia for ten years from his first nationals win in 1976, when he broke the Australian record, until he retired after the National Championships in 1985. Although he was the National Champion and record holder for the decathlon he was not selected to compete in the Montreal Olympics that year. Francois Robert "Rob" de Castella (born 27 February 1957) is an Australian former world champion marathon runner. De Castella is widely known as "Deek" or "Deeks" to the Australian public, and "Tree" to his competitors due to his thick legs and inner calm. He holds the Oceanic record for the marathon. Kenneth ("Ken") John Lorraway (6 February 1956 – 4 January 2007) was an Australian triple jumper, who represented his native country twice at the Summer Olympics: 1980 and 1984 and Commonwealth Games: 1978 and 1982. His best Olympic result was finishing in 8th place in Moscow, USSR with a leap of 16.44 metres. He was born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. Ian Bernard Campbell (born 18 April 1957 in Victoria) is a retired long and triple jumper from Australia.
