Austral (bus Manufacturer)
Austral was an Australian bus manufacturer in Geebung, Brisbane. History Austral was originally formed as Athol Hedges. It was later renamed Domino Hedges, then Domino before becoming Austral in 1982 when purchased by the Australian Manufacturing Group. It originally bodied buses diversifying into integral buses and coaches (body and chassis) in the 1970s. In December 1988 Austral was sold to JRA Limited who also owned Denning, Austral's largest rival in the coach market. Both continued to operate separately until 1990 when the Denning plant in Acacia Ridge was closed and production transferred to the Austral factory. From 1992 the combined business was rebranded as Austral Denning. In July 1996, along with JRA's other bus bodybuilding operations, it was sold to the Clifford Corporation and rebranded Austral Pacific. Denning Manufacturing is an Australian bus manufacturer in Acacia Ridge, Queensland, Acacia Ridge, Brisbane, Australia. In September 2019, it was acquired by Custom Bus, but its branding and operations will be retained. Current Operations Denning Manufacturing was formed in 2004 in a take-over of Alan B Denning's manufacturing plant. It manufacturers integral buses and coaches (chassis and body) as well as chassis for bodying by other manufacturers with Caterpillar Inc., Caterpillar or Cummins engines. History Denning Denning commenced bodying buses in Brisbane in 1958. Denning's first integral bus (both chassis and body), the Monocoach, was launched in 1966. Geebung, Queensland
Geebung is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Geebung had a population of 4,626 people. Geography The suburb is centred on its railway station on the Caboolture railway line. History The suburb takes its name from its railway station, which in turn was named after the fruit of the plant Persoonia media, known as "jibung" in the Dharuk language. The Geebung Baptist church was initiated with a stump capping ceremony on Saturday 7 February 1925; prior to this services had been held in the war memorial hall. On Saturday 14 February 1925, the church was opened in a ceremony attended by 150 people. It was made of weatherboard and could seat about 100 people. Bus manufacturing, a sector of the automotive industry, manufactures buses and coaches. History Bus manufacturing had its earliest origins in carriage building. Other bus manufacturers had their origins in truck manufacturing. Historically, chassis designs were shared between trucks and buses, but in later years specific bus chassis have been developed, and the midibus introduced a lighter weight bus chassis than normal trucks. Bus manufacture historically developed as chassis and body builds. Ansair was an Australian bus bodybuilder owned by Ansett Transport Industries and later the Clifford Corporation. History Ansair was founded by Reg Ansett in 1945 at Tullamarine, to make bodies for his Ansett Pioneer coaches, as well as manufacture aircraft components for Ansett Airways. It also provided bus bodies for other operators. In 1987 a plant opened in Kingston, Tasmania, to make bodies for Scania buses used by Metro Tasmania, and in January 1993 a plant opened at East-West Airlines' former Tamworth Airport maintenance facility to make bodies for Scanias used by Sydney Buses. In August 1995 Ansett Transport Industries sold Ansair to the Clifford Corporation. In September 1995 the Kingston plant closed, followed in 1997 by Tullamarine. Volvo B10BLE
The Volvo B10BLE was a rear-engined low-entry single-decker bus chassis manufactured by Volvo in Sweden between 1993 and 2004. The first prototypes were built in 1992, but mass production started in 1993, only a year after the high-floor B10B. It was popular in Australia, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. It had the engine mounted on the rear overhang of the bus. It became the successor of the city bus version of the B10B and was used as a base for single-decker buses worldwide. The B10BLE was available in diesel powered format, and later in a compressed natural gas powered format with the fuel tanks on the roof of the bus. Its low-floor design was widely promoted by Volvo when it was first launched, on the basis of added convenience to the passengers, and the increase in transport efficiency due to the low-floor design.
