''Aubrieta libanotica'', common name Lebanese rock cress, is a species of flowering plant in the mustard family Brassicaceae. The genus is named after Claude Aubriet, a French flower painter. Libanotica is native to the mountainous ranges of Lebanon and some parts of Syria. It prefers light, well-drained soil, is tolerant of a wide pH range, and can grow in partial shade or full sun. Etymology The genus is named after Claude Aubriet, a French flower painter. Brassicaceae () or (the older) Cruciferae () is a medium-sized and economically important family of flowering plants commonly known as the mustards, the crucifers, or the cabbage family. Most are herbaceous plants, while some are shrubs. The leaves are simple (although are sometimes deeply incised), lack stipules, and appear alternately on stems or in rosettes. Claude Aubriet
Claude Aubriet (c. 1665 or 1651 – 3 December 1742) was a French illustrator and botanical artist. Biography Aubriet was born in Châlons-en-Champagne or in Moncetz. He was a botanical illustrator at the Jardin du Roi in Paris. There Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) noticed his work and commissioned him as illustrator of his 1694 ''Elemens de Botanique''. From 1700 to 1702 he accompanied Tournefort and Andreas von Gundelsheimer on an expedition to the Middle East. There he made drawings of historical sites and the region's flora. After his return to Paris, Aubriet continued his work with the botanists at the Jardin du Roi, contributing to '' Les Vélins du Roi''. In 1707 Aubriet succeeded Jean Joubert (1643–1707) as the royal botanical painter. He retired in 1735, and was succeeded by Françoise Basseporte (1701–1780), a student of his and a former collaborator. He died in Paris. Pierre Edmond Boissier
Pierre Edmond Boissier (25 May 1810 Geneva – 25 September 1885 Valeyres-sous-Rances) was a Swiss prominent botanist, explorer and mathematician. He was the son of Jacques Boissier (1784-1857) and Caroline Butini (1786-1836), daughter of Pierre Butini (1759-1838) a well-known physician and naturalist from Geneva. With his sister, Valérie Boissier (1813-1894), he received a strict education with lessons delivered in Italian and Latin. Edmond's interest in natural history stemmed from holidays in the company of his mother and his grandfather, Pierre Butini at Valeyres-sous-Rances.
