Attulus Saltator
''Attulus saltator'' (formerly ''Sitticus saltator'') is a species of jumping spider, from the Sitticinae subfamily. It was first described by Frederick Octavius Pickard-Cambridge in 1868 and has a Palearctic distribution, including Great Britain. Description Females have a body length of up to about , males being slightly smaller at around . The carapace is black with a lighter marking in the midline, the abdomen brownish with lighter markings. The fourth pair of legs are longer than in species of the closely related genus ''Sitticus''. Identification is based on the precise structure of the female epigyne and the male palpal bulb. Taxonomy The species was first described, as ''Attus saltator'', by Octavius Pickard-Cambridge in 1868. In 1871, he moved it to the genus ''Salticus''. Frederick Octavius Pickard-Cambridge
Frederick Octavius Pickard-Cambridge (3 November 1860 – 9 February 1905) was an English arachnologist. He is sometimes confused with his uncle, Octavius Pickard-Cambridge (1828–1917), who was also an arachnologist and from whom F. O. Pickard-Cambridge picked up his enthusiasm for the study of spiders. Life F. O. Pickard-Cambridge was born in Warmwell, Dorset, where his father was rector. He became a curate at St Cuthbert's church in Carlisle for a few years after having been educated at Sherborne School and Exeter College, Oxford. He left to become a professional biological illustrator, and in 1894–1895 spent several months in the Amazon as a naturalist on board the SS ''Faraday''. Jumping spiders are a group of spiders that constitute the family (biology), family Salticidae. The epigyne or epigynum is the external genital structure of female spiders. The two palpal bulbs – also known as palpal organs and genital bulbs – are the copulatory organs of a male spider. They are borne on the last segment of the pedipalps (the front "limbs" of a spider), giving the spider an appearance often described as like wearing boxing gloves. Jerzy Prószyński (born 1935 in Warsaw) is a Polish arachnologist specializing in systematics of jumping spiders (family Salticidae). He is a graduate of the University of Warsaw, a long-term employee of the Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities and the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Biography In 1957 he completed his biological studies at the University of Warsaw. During his studies he was employed at the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, where he conducted research on spiders in the Kampinos Forest.
