Attorney General Of Israel
The attorney general of Israel ( he, היועץ המשפטי לממשלה, ''Ha-Yo'etz Ha-Mishpati La-Memshala'', lit. ''Legal Advisor to the Government'') heads the legal system of the executive branch and the public prosecution of the state. The attorney general advises the government in legal matters, represents the state authorities in court, advises in the preparation of legal memoranda for the government in general and the justice minister in particular. Likewise she or he examines and advises upon private member's bills in the Knesset. Additionally, the attorney general is tasked with protecting the rule of law and, as such, entrusted with protecting the public interest from possible harm by government authorities. Cabinet Of Israel
The Cabinet of Israel (officially: he, ממשלת ישראל ''Memshelet Yisrael'') exercises executive authority in the State of Israel. It consists of ministers who are chosen and led by the prime minister. The composition of the government must be approved by a vote of confidence in the Knesset (the Israeli parliament). Under Israeli law, the prime minister may dismiss members of the government, but must do so in writing, and new appointees must be approved by the Knesset. Most ministers lead ministries, though some are ministers without portfolio. Most ministers are members of the Knesset, though only the Prime Minister and the " designated acting prime minister" are required to be Knesset members. Some ministers are also called deputy and vice prime ministers. Unlike the designated acting prime minister, these roles have no statutory meanings. Israel Bar Association (; IBA) is the bar association for all Israeli lawyers. History The Israel Bar Association is organized as a corporation, with a Central Committee, a National Assembly and five districts. Membership is mandatory for lawyers licensed in Israel. Avichai Mandelblit ( he, אביחי מנדלבליט; born 29 July 1963) is an Israeli jurist who served as the Attorney General of Israel from 2016 to 2022. Mandelblit had a long career in the Israel Defense Forces legal system, eventually serving as the Chief Military Advocate General between 2004 and 2011. Yehuda Weinstein
Yehuda Weinstein ( he, יהודה וינשטיין; born 19 April 1944) is an Israeli lawyer and former Attorney General of Israel, having replaced the previous attorney general, Menachem Mazuz, on 1 February 2010. Biography Weinstein was born in Tel Aviv, Mandatory Palestine to Jewish Parents who made Aliyah from Poland during the 1930s. He grew up in Florentin, Tel Aviv, and during his adolescence he was involved in sports, especially boxing, and won the Israeli youth boxing championship. During his national service in the Israel Defense Forces, he served in the Paratroopers Brigade. He later graduated from Tel Aviv University with a B.A in Law and M.A from Bar-Ilan University. Menachem "Meni" Mazuz ( he, מְנַחֵם "מֶנִי" מָזוּז; born April 30, 1955) is an Israeli jurist and Supreme Court of Israel, Supreme Court justice, who served as the Attorney General of Israel, Israeli Attorney General in the years 2004–2010. Elyakim Rubinstein ( he, אליקים רובינשטיין, born June 13, 1947) is a former Vice President of the Supreme Court of Israel. Beforehand, he served as the Attorney General of Israel from 1997 to 2004. Roni Bar-On
Roni Bar-On ( he, רוני בר-און, born 2 June 1948) is an Israeli politician and lawyer. He served as a member of the Knesset for Likud and Kadima between 2003 and 2011, and is also a former Minister of Finance. Biography Bar-On was born in Tel Aviv shortly after Israeli independence in 1948. After his national service, in which he rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, he studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Whilst working as a lawyer he became a Justice in the Military Court of Appeals in the West Bank. Prof. Michael Ben-Yair ( he, מיכאל בן יאיר; born 1 September 1942) was raised in Sheikh Jarrah until 1948, is a former Attorney General of Israel, a position he held between 1993 and 1996, and former acting judge at the Supreme Court of Israel. Yosef Harish ( he, יוסף חריש 1923 – 6 November 2013) was an Israeli jurist who served as the country's Attorney General of Israel, Attorney General between 1986 and 1993. Biography Born in Jerusalem in 1923, Harish was educated in a yeshiva. He joined the Haganah, and volunteered for the British Army during World War II, before serving as an officer in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Moshe Ben-Ze'ev
Moshe Ben-Ze'ev ( he, משה בן זאב, December 8, 1911 – June 25, 1995) was an Israeli jurist who served as Attorney General between 1963 and 1968. Legal career Ben-Ze'ev was born December 8, 1911 in Luninets in the Russian Empire (now in Belarus). He immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1935. Gideon Hausner
Gideon Hausner ( he, גדעון האוזנר, 26 September 1915 – 15 November 1990) was an Israeli jurist and politician. Between 1960 and 1963, he served as Attorney General and was later elected to the Knesset and served in the cabinet. Hausner is most widely known for heading the team of prosecutors at the war crimes trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem in 1961. Hausner is generally credited with exposing the Holocaust to the world in bold cross-examinations of Eichmann, but was criticized for showmanship. His judicial skill also set the precedent that the defense "I was only following orders" is not valid if such orders are wholly criminal and illegal. Haim Cohn
Haim Herman Cohn ( he, חיים הרמן כהן, 11 March 1911 – 10 April 2002) was an Israeli jurist and politician. Biography Haim Cohn was born in Lübeck, Germany in 1911 to a religious family. He was chairman of a World Agudath Israel branch in Hamburg. At age 18 he came to the British Mandate of Palestine to study at the Mercaz HaRav yeshiva in Jerusalem, where he studied under rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook. He was also a Hazzan in Mea Shearim. He returned to Germany to complete his law studies at Frankfurt University. He emigrated to Palestine 1933 due to the rise of Nazism in Germany. He had earned with a PhD in law.
