The attorney general of Argentina ( es, link=no, Procurador General de la Nación Argentina) is the chief of all the prosecutors who act before national courts, as well as the designated prosecutor in the Supreme Court. The attorney general leads the Ministry of Public Prosecutions (''Ministerio Público Fiscal''; MPF). The Ministry of Public Prosecutions and the Ombudsperson's Office (''Defensoría General'') make up Argentina's Public Ministry, in accordance to Article 120 of the Argentine constitution. Since 2017, the attorney general of Argentina has been Eduardo Casal, who serves in interim fashion following the resignation of Alejandra Gils Carbó. The Supreme Court of Argentina ( es, link=no, Corte Suprema de Argentina), officially known as the Supreme Court of Justice of the Argentine Nation ( es, link=no, Corte Suprema de Justicia de la Nación Argentina, CSJN), is the highest court of law of the Argentine Republic. It was inaugurated on 15 January 1863. However, during much of the 20th century, the Court and the Argentine judicial system in general, lacked autonomy from the executive power. The Court was reformed in 2003 by the decree 222/03. The Supreme Court functions as a last resort tribunal. Its rulings cannot be appealed. It also decides on cases dealing with the interpretation of the constitution (for example, it can overturn a law passed by Congress if deems it unconstitutional). Nicolás Eduardo Becerra (25 January 1943 – 9 April 2023) was an Argentine lawyer and politician. He served as Attorney General of Argentina from 1997 to 2004. He also served as National Deputy from Mendoza Province from 1991 to 1995. Political career Becerra served as a national deputy for the Justicialista Party for the province of Mendoza between 24 April 1991 and 9 December 1995, as general defender of the Nation, secretary of the Cabinet headquarters—when the incumbent was Eduardo Bauzá—and was Attorney General of the Nation between 23 April 1997 and 5 February 2004.
