Henry Sewell
Henry Sewell (7 September 1807 – 14 May 1879) was a prominent 19th-century New Zealand politician. He was a notable campaigner for New Zealand self-government, and is generally regarded as having been the country's first premier (an office that would later be titled "Prime Minister"), having led the Sewell Ministry in 1856. He later served as Colonial Treasurer (1856–59), as Attorney-General (1861–62), and twice as Minister of Justice (1864–65, 1869–72). Early life Sewell was the fourth son of Thomas Sewell, a solicitor, and his wife Jane . He was born on 7 September 1807 in the town of Newport, on England's Isle of Wight. He was educated at Hyde Abbey School near Winchester. He qualified as a solicitor, and joined his father's law firm in 1826. In 1840, however, Sewell's father lost a staggering sum of money when a bank failed, and died shortly afterwards, leaving the family with a great deal of debt. This put considerable strain on Sewell. Jonathan Sewell
Jonathan Sewell (born Jonathan Sewall; June 6, 1766 – November 11, 1839) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Lower Canada. Early life He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of Jonathan Sewall, the last British attorney general of Massachusetts and Esther Quincy. After a group of patriots attacked the family's residence, the Sewalls moved to Bristol, England; they adopted the spelling Sewell for the family name at this time. He attended Brasenose College, Oxford and then went to New Brunswick in 1785, where he studied law with Ward Chipman. He was named registrar of the Vice Admiralty Court for New Brunswick in 1787. In 1788, he was called to the bar and set up practice. Career The following year, he moved to Quebec City and qualified as a lawyer there. Robert Sewell (lawyer)
Robert Sewell (1751 – 30 April 1828) was a British politician and colonial official who sat in the Parliament of Great Britain from 1796 to 1802 and served as the Attorney General of Jamaica. Sewell was the son of Sir Thomas Sewell and Catherine Heath of Ottershaw Park, Surrey and christened 13 December 1751 at All Hallows, London. He studied law at the Middle Temple and was called to the bar in 1770. He married Sarah Lewis in St Pancras, London on 18 November 1775. In February 1776 they set sail for Jamaica on board the ''Judith and Hilaria'' from Portsmouth with Sarah's sisters Mary, Maria and Catherine. In 1780 he was appointed as the Attorney General of Jamaica, returning in 1795 to become a colonial agent for Jamaica. In 1781 he fathered an illegitimate son with a local black woman.
