Atlantis (1913 Film)
''Atlantis'' is a 1913 Danish silent film directed by August Blom, the head of production at the Nordisk Film company, and was based upon the 1912 novel by Gerhart Hauptmann. It starred an international cast headlined by Danish matinée actor Olaf Fønss and Austrian opera diva Ida Orloff. The story, which tells the tale of a doctor who travels to the United States in search of a cure for his ailing wife, includes the tragic sinking of an ocean liner after it strikes an object at sea. Released only one year after the sinking of the RMS ''Titanic'', the film drew considerable attention as well as criticism due to similarities to the actual tragedy. The high production costs for ''Atlantis'' were not equaled by box office returns at that time. However, the film went on to become the most watched film for Nordisk Film and has been hailed by film historian Erik Ulrichsen as a Danish masterpiece and "one of the first modern films." August Blom
August Blom (26 December 1869 – 10 January 1947) was a Danish film director, producer, and pioneer of silent films during the "golden age" of Danish filmmaking from 1910 to 1914. Career Blom began his acting career in 1893 in Kolding, and was employed as a company actor for the Folketeatret from 1907 to 1910. During that period, Blom also began performing in films for the Nordisk Film Kompangni. He debuted there as a director in 1910 with his film ''Livets Storme'' (''Storms of Life''). That same year he was made the Head of Production for Nordisk Film and given the title of Director. Blom was a prolific filmmaker and during the golden age of Danish silent films, 1910 to 1914, he directed 78 movies. Before he retired from Nordisk Film and filmmaking in 1925, Blom directed more than 100 titles. Blom's volume of work is the largest of any Danish film director. The ''Berliner Tageblatt'' or ''BT'' was a German language newspaper published in Berlin from 1872 to 1939. Along with the '' Frankfurter Zeitung'', it became one of the most important liberal German newspapers of its time. History The ''Berliner Tageblatt'' was first published by Rudolf Mosse as an advertising paper on 1 January 1872, but developed into a liberal newspaper. On 5 January 1919 the office of the newspaper was briefly occupied by Freikorps soldiers in the German Revolution. By 1920, the ''BT'' had achieved a daily circulation of about 245,000. Prior to the National Socialist administration taking office on 30 January 1933, the newspaper was particularly critical and hostile to their program. Svend Kornbeck
Svend Kornbeck (3 July 1869 – 30 October 1933) was a Danish stage and film actor. Early life and career Kornbeck was born in Copenhagen, the son of painter Johan Peter Kornbeck (1837–1894) and his wife Anna Nathalie Kornbeck (''née'' Trolle) (1849–1930). He was employed in various Copenhagen and provincial theaters; the Dagmar Theatre, Det Ny Teater and the Odense Teater. In 1912 he debuted as a film actor and then starred in some 30 films, all but one were with the Nordisk Film company. One of Kornbeck's more memorable film roles is that of Christian Berg in the 1924 Swedish silent film '' The Saga of Gosta Berling'', directed by Mauritz Stiller. Personal life Kornbeck was first married to Asta Johanne Fernanda Jørgensen (1872–1904) and then to actress Ellen Kornbeck (''née'' Pedersen). Thomsen was best known for her roles as the elegant leading lady opposite the Danish matinee idol Valdemar Psilander. Life and career Ebba Thomsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on 3 May 1887, the daughter of Ove Thomsen, one of the leading Danish fashion designers. Thomsen debuted on stage at Det Ny Teater in 1910 and began to perform in cinema in 1912 at Nordisk Film. From then until the early 1920s, Thomsen appeared in about 75 films—mostly as the lead actress—and achieved star status in Denmark.
