Atkinson and McLay was an architectural partnership in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It produced a number of significant works and is the origins of one of Brisbane's major architectural firms in the present day. History The partnership between Henry Wallace Atkinson and Charles McLay was established in 1907. The practice subsequently assumed the position of Diocesan Architect to the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane, designing a number of schools and churches in South East Queensland. The partnership lasted until McLay's death in 1918. However, the firm continued to remain prominent in Queensland, evolving into the present day firm of Conrad Gargett. Henry Wallace Atkinson
Henry Wallace Atkinson (22 April 1866 – 26 April 1938) was an architect in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Many of his works are now heritage-listed. Early life Henry Wallace Atkinson was born on 22 April 1866 in Brisbane, the son of Paul Cole Atkinson from Cork, Ireland and his wife Jane (née Creech). Having finished school, he was one of the first intake of students into the Brisbane Technical College in 1883. He was a keen athlete and was Queensland champion cyclist in 1887. He married Martha Jane Hipwood, daughter of James Hipwood (Mayor of Brisbane) on 30 April 1891 at St Philips Church of England at Thompson Estate (now Annerley). Career He was articled to architect Christian Waagepetersen and then worked as a draughtsman in the office of the Queensland Colonial Architect from 1882 to 1890. Charles McLay
Charles McLay (circa 1860 – 2 May 1918) was a Scottish-born architect in Queensland, Australia. Some of his works are now heritage-listed. Architectural career After working for a number of years in the Public Works Department in the Queensland Government Architect's Office, McLay entered into a partnership with Henry Wallace Atkinson in 1906, trading as Atkinson and McLay. Other interests McLay joined the Naval Defence Force as a sub-lieutenant on 6 May 1898 and was promoted to lieutenant on 31 October 1901. He was commander when he was placed on the retired list of the Australian Naval Brigade on 15 January 1910. Following the resignation of Robin Dods, McLay was appointed Diocesan Architect to the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane in 1916; it passed to Atkinson after McLay's death in 1918. The Anglican Diocese of Brisbane, also known as Anglican Church Southern Queensland, is based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The diocesan bishop's seat is at St John's Cathedral, Brisbane. Conrad Gargett
Conrad Gargett is an Australian architecture and design practice delivering expertise globally. It was founded in Brisbane in 1890 and is one of Queensland's oldest architectural firms. The practice operates out of studios in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Townsville and Addis Ababa. Establishment Conrad Gargett Architecture was established as HW Atkinson in 1890 by Henry Wallace Atkinson with the winning design for the new Brisbane Head Fire Station. Charles McLay joined Atkinson to form the partnership HW Atkinson & Chas McLay in 1907. The practice subsequently assumed the position of Diocesan Architect to the Anglican Church, designing several schools and churches in South East Queensland. The Ithaca Town Council Chambers is a heritage-listed former town hall of the former local government area of the Town of Ithaca, and now a community centre in Paddington, Queensland, Paddington, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Located at 99 Enoggera Terrace (on the corner with Kennedy Terrace), Red Hill, Queensland, Red Hill, it was designed by Atkinson and McLay and built in 1910 by Charles Thomas Hall and Francis Joseph Mayer. It is also known as Ithaca Library and Red Hill Kindergarten. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 24 March 2000.
