Athletics At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Women's Marathon
The women's marathon event at the 2020 Summer Olympics started at 06:00 on 7 August 2021 in Sapporo. Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya won gold in 2:27:20 followed by world record holder and Kenyan teammate Brigid Kosgei with silver, and American Molly Seidel winning the bronze medal in her third-ever marathon. The race was moved north, from Tokyo to Sapporo because the latter is on average cooler in August, as decided in 2019 by the IOC. The start had been moved an hour earlier to 06:00 for the same reason. The two cities turned out to have almost the same temperature, as Sapporo recorded at 06:00 when the race started and at 08:30. Natasha Wodak (divorced Fraser, born 17 December 1981) is a Canadian long-distance runner. She competed in the 10,000 metres at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China, placing 23rd. Wodak formerly held the Canadian 10,000m record. In July 2016, Wodak was named to the Canadian Olympic team for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, where she finished 22nd. Dayna Pidhoresky (born 18 November 1986) is a Canadian long-distance runner. She competed in the women's marathon at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. On 20 October 2019, Pidhoresky won the Canadian Olympic Trials Marathon in a time of 2:29.03. Her performance secured her position for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Marathon representing Canada. However, on the flight to Tokyo, Pidhoresky was seated next to a passenger who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19, and as a result was required to quarantine for fourteen days without access to training facilities. Despite this, she opted to compete, finishing the race in seventy-third and last place with a time of 3:03:10. Malindi Elmore (born March 13, 1980 in Kelowna, British Columbia) is a Canadian track and field athlete specialising in the middle-distance events. As of January 19, 2020 she holds the Canadian record for the marathon, running a 2:24:50. She was a five-time All-American at Stanford University and holds the school record in the 800m and 1500m distances. Tejitu Daba Chalchissa (born 20 August 1991) is an Ethiopian-born long-distance runner who competes internationally for Bahrain. She competes mainly in cross country and track running events. She won the gold medal over 5000 metres at the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships.
