The men's 5000 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 3 and 6 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. Approximately 45 athletes competed; the exact number was dependent on how many nations use universality places to enter athletes in addition to the 42 qualifying through time or ranking (6 universality places were used in 2016). Summary After setting the world record in a near time trial in 2020, Joshua Cheptegei was the overwhelming favorite. Mo Farah, the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic champion, had failed to meet the Olympic qualifying standard. Bronze medalist Hagos Gebrhiwet also did not return, but silver medalist Paul Chelimo was back for another go. None of the Ethiopian medalists from the World Championships came, but Canadian World Championship bronze medalist Mohammed Ahmed was. The Japan National Stadium, officially named and formerly known as or , is a multi-purpose stadium used mostly for association football in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. The facility served as the main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the venue for track and field athletics events at the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics in 2021. IAAF World Rankings
The World Athletics Rankings are an individual athlete ranking system for the sport of athletics, managed by World Athletics. It is used to establish the number one athlete within an athletics event and to partially determine qualification into the World Athletics Championships and the athletics at the Summer Olympics. The rankings are published weekly by World Athletics on Wednesday. WA President Sebastian Coe said the goal of this system is so athletes and fans "have a clear understanding of the hierarchy of competitions from national through to area and up to global events, allowing them to follow a logical season-long path to the pinnacle of athletics' top two competitions". David McNeill (runner)
David McNeill (born 6 October 1986 in East Melbourne) is an Australian long-distance runner. He was selected for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, McNeill finished 8th in his heat of the Men's 5000m in a time of 13:39.97. He was therefore eliminated. Early years McNeill was just 10-years-old when he started cross-country running. He had a natural ability and decided to focus on long-distance running full-time. He made his international debut in 2004 at the Commonwealth Youth (U18) Games running in the 3000m. After graduating from Xavier College in Kew Melbourne McNeill went to Northern Arizona University where he excelled. He was twice named to ESPN magazine's NCAA All-Academic First Team. Woody Kincaid
William "Woody" Kincaid (born September 21, 1992) is an American long-distance runner. He won the gold medal for the 5000 meters at the 2022 NACAC Championships. Kincaid is the North American indoor record holder in that event. High school Woody Kincaid attended Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, where he emerged as one of the top high school distance runners in Colorado until he graduated in 2011. While competing in high school cross country and track he became a multiple-time state finalist highlighted by 2010 5A Cross Country State championship individual title. Grant Fisher (born April 22, 1997) is a Canadian-born American professional middle- and long-distance runner. He placed fifth in the 10,000 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and fourth at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. Fisher holds North American records in the 3000 meters, 5000 m, and 10,000 m as well as the indoor record for the 5000 m, all set in 2022. Oscar Chelimo
Oscar Chelimo (born 12 December 2001) is a Ugandan long-distance runner. His older brother, Jacob Kiplimo is also an elite long-distance runner. Career In 2018, he finished in 7th place in the men's 5000 metres event at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships held in Tampere, Finland. In 2018, he also competed in the boys' 3000 metres at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires, Argentina and he won the bronze medal. He represented Uganda at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco. He competed in the men's 5000 metres and he finished in 5th place. Daniel Ebenyo
Daniel Simiu Ebenyo (born 18 September 1995) is a Kenyan middle-distance and long-distance runner. Early life Brought up in Baragoi, Samburu County, having lost his father early in life to cattle rustling, he was raised by his mother and later, grandmother. He has said that it was while at Aiyam Day secondary school a 24 km trek to the learning institution and back home would eventually make him an athlete as walking to school early in the morning and back in the evening was the most dangerous time to do the journey as they crossed bandits' battle grounds along the narrow paths to the school and even though he would set off at 5:30 am for an 8 am start at school, would sometimes be forced to take an even longer route. Getnet Wale Bayabl (born 16 July 2000) is an Ethiopian runner specialising in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He finished fourth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well as at the 2019 and 2022 World Athletics Championships.
