Athletics At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's 400 Metres
The men's 400 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place between 1 and 5 August 2021 at the Olympic Stadium. Approximately fifty athletes were expected to compete; the exact number was dependent on how many nations use universality places to enter athletes in addition to the 48 qualifying through time or ranking (3 universality places were used in 2016). 48 athletes from 33 nations competed. The event was won by Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas, with Anthony Zambrano of Colombia taking silver. Those were the first medals in the men's 400 metres for each of those two nations. Kirani James of Grenada won his third consecutive medal in the event with his bronze, making him the first man to earn three medals in the 400 metres. Summary Wayde van Niekerk's world record in Rio put this event in the spotlight. The Japan National Stadium, officially named and formerly known as or , is a multi-purpose stadium used mostly for association football in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. The facility served as the main stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the venue for track and field athletics events at the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics in 2021. Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir (born 15 June 1995) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and 2022 World champion in the 800 metres. Korir won the silver medal in the event at the 2018 African Championships in Athletics. As of November 2022 he was ranked as the sixth fastest athlete of all time over the 800 m, with a personal best of 1:42.05. Korir is a three-time Diamond League champion at the event. Jonathan Jones (born 6 February 1999) is a sprinter from Barbados. He qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2019 when at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, he finished fourth in the men's 400 metres final with a then-new national record time of 44.64 seconds. He won the 400 m gold medal in the 2021 NACAC U23 Championships. While competing in the 2020 Summer Games 400m races, Jones qualified from his heat before running 45.61 to finish eighth in his semi-final. Early life From Spanish Town, Jamaica and a former St Jago High School athlete, Bailey moved on to competing for the University of Texas-El Paso where he made the NCAA 400 metres final in 2021 before injuring his hamstring in the race.
